Thankyou for the replies, I will read through them properly when I have time. The car is a 1996 ford fiesta so it is old.

A 13 Yr old car would explain the list.
If several of those items fail on the next MOT, it might be cheaper to buy another car.

Looks like fairly common "faults" you might find on any 3+ year old car.
IMHO I wouldn't expect a list that long for any car under 10 years old, certainly not a 3 year old car.

it sound like any fiesta of this age ive seen to be honest, even down to the bumper being adrift!

the bushes wont cost a fortune to replace, you can buy them for pennies almost from ford if you insist, but there are plenty of aftermarket ones just as good.
fitting wont cost a fortune either a few hours labour to do them.
brake pads and discs are also cheap as chips for the fiesta so again parts will be cheap with an hours labour to replace them.
c.v. gaitors are also cheap to buy aftermarket and can be fitted easily.

if it needs all of this work done to pass the next MOT then at most i would be expecting to pay around £200 for all this work to be carried out at the most.

find a mechanic who works on his own from his house or someone who does homers, they will be the cheapest by a mile labour wise. or take it to an independant garage. dont use a dealer or a fast fit centre.

I'd be tempted to take this up with the seller personally as there is a lot of potential work coming up and it appears to have been hidden purposefully from you as there's no excuse for losing it in a few days.
    .

If it is a private sale, the seller can hide what he likes. Sold as seen.

And what's to say the seller hasn't paid to have it all fixed if you don't know what you're looking at (although I guess most sellers would be proud to tell you all these sort of details of the work it's had done no matter what the cost).

Bushes can be cheap, but some cannot be replaced on their own without replacing the whole part / arm.

Without doing all the work yourself, I doubt you'd get this done (inc parts) for less than £200.

I posted this before he mentioned the age of the car.
I did expect a dealer purchase initially based on the date of the MOT and him purchasing a car in April.
  • I'm not so worried about it anymore, I'll make sure to get it MOT'd early so I can fix any faults if it fails and will probably get the CV joints sorted as someone suggested. It's kinda my first car so I don't want to sell, nor can I afford to sell it then buy another. Also I don't know who did it since I bought it a long way from where I live but my dad knows a good independant garage which I use when I have any problems.

Now I have to make another thread about a potential car for my brother...

A 1996 Fiesta is 'Bangeromics' territory. Drive it until it's next MOT, and scrap if it fails - it won't be worth repairing.

Hmmm.......I know what your saying but it would be worth spending a few hundred getting it through, the devil you know etc (if it survives that long....lol).

OP don't rush to spend money but keep a close eye on it. One thing to do is ensure you wire brush the brake pipes before the next MOT or they will probably fail it on corroded pipes when they are normally OK.

Put grease on the pipes, that usually keeps the mot testers happy :)

The thing that will probably kill off most Fiestas is rot (well I've seen plenty a rotten one of that sort of age). Areas to watch out for are within a foot of the suspension mountings an seatbelt anchorages, and the sills. Usually to fail the mot chunks will be coming off and you'll be able to poke a hole in what should be solid metal.
