what's a reasonable estimate to get:
a little second hand 50cc (that should be big enough to get her round uni? or should it be a 125?)
a helmet (not second hand for preference)
lessons (average is what? 5? 10?)
the test itself (or is it 2?)
A provisional license I know is £50
Anything I've forgotten?
Either way, thanks to the original poster for finding this as it should be good fun - never even ridden a peddle bike in my life!
Hello JamesO,
To answer your questions:
I wouldn't bother with a 50cc (too gutless for modern traffic), go with the 125cc if she is old enough.
It is good that you are not considering a second hand helmet. They can be bought new at very reasonable cost anyway. Always get the best you can afford. Like the saying "If you have a £5 head....... protect it with a £5 helmet."
The number of lessons needed is not hard and fast but dependant on the natural ability and learning capacity of the individual. Try to go with someone with good recommendations, word of mouth is always best, especially when your safety depends on it. It may be best to go for an intensive course if she has the time available.
As for the motorcycle test requirements you could try these sites:
mag-uk.org
dft.gov.uk
for further information.
Make sure you get her some good, protective clothing with body armour in, waterproofs would suffice initially and good gloves and boots.

I'm genuinely interested in getting a bike and have registered for this. I'll update the thread with the results of the course etc.0

I know it hasn't been long but they haven't got back to me. Does motorcycle training like CBTs etc take place in this kind of weather or will they wait until all traces of snow/ice have gone?
Edit: Two weeks later, I'd still heard nothing back. I also emailed another school who displayed the GetOn logo but they never bothered to reply about my Free Ride either. Decided to forget about the GetOn scheme (useless in my experience) and book a CBT with a different school.0 -
