I want a second computer, not for internet

If you don't buy XP, then little point in going to Vista, make the move to W7, which is much better than Vista.
Have to disagree again. There aren't too many laptops under £300 with Windows 7 around. There are a lot of laptops under £300 with Vista right now.
I'm using Vista Ultimate on a daily basis, with no problems. I really don't understand why people repeat these things like sheep.
What are the problems likely to be encountered by the OP whilst using Vista on a modern machine with adequate RAM?
She wants to view some photos for goodness sake. Keep things in perspective.
Plus, as Windows 7 is relatively new, she is more likely to have problems with program compatibility.0 -
The £195 cheapie is still available. Though really I would like it to have another 1 GB of RAM to ensure the smooth running of programs.
This one is much the same for £210, though has a bigger screen which you may prefer.
1 GB RAM module here for £11.60. Will work with either machine.
If you have a wireless router at home, at least you have the possibility of having an Internet connection in the loft if you do need it. You'll probably need to connect it initially anyway, for the purpose of updating drivers and patches.
What are the programs you may need to run may I ask?0 -

This one (3D card builder, main pic) which the box says minimum requirements Windows 2000/XP, Pentium 111, 128mb Ram. You can import your own images and design your own papers etc.
This and this by another company. First one is at least two years old and says minimum requirements Windows 98 SE and 128mb Ram.
Then I have many others like this which I've had since way back when using Windows 98 which use Acrobat Reader.
Most of them are chose an image/paper and print or import into a document and print. The first one I linked to you can manipulate your image, create your own papers by repeating the image, etc., all built into the programme.
Then I have a memory stick with many images and papers downloaded for free (legit) from the 'net. I just import these (mainly jpeg) into a document and print from that.
Thanks Donnie.0 -
If you really need/want to stick with XP, you can use this NetTop PC for £273; but I'm not really sure that it is up to much. Detailed video may not play particularly smoothly.
Comes with a 19" Widescreen monitor.
You can try it for up to 7 days, if it doesn't suit you will have only lost your postage costs.0 -
If you find that XP is not necessary, then both Dell Outlet(search for Inspiron 1545) and Clearance Bargains have laptops in the £250 to £275 region with Windows Home Premium that will far exceed your specification.
For your simple needs, the NetTop looks ok and the large screen size may be a bonus.0 -
Thanks Donnie, you've been very helpful. I'll do some more digging around. I mentioned to OH today (who's in hospital a couple of hundred miles away for 2 or 3 months) that I know what I want for Christmas
so I'll see what he'll budget for (but he does owe me for last Christmas/birthday/anniversary too :rotfl: ).
