The revo nettop might fit the bill with a tft screen of whatever size (or a free crt from freecycle)

Thanks Coolagarry, I'll keep that in mind if nothing comes of picking one up from my DD's company .

I hope you're all still around to help me out here.

OK, so DD's company are not upgrading anytime in the future so nothing doing there. I've asked the local computer chap (who just about everyone uses) and he doesn't come across any second hand ones. Cash Converters places are 1.5 hours drive away so not much point wasting time and money for a special journey.

So I've found this one at a price that I'm willing to pay and it's got Windows XP Home which I know all my CD roms will work with.

Can anyone answer a few questions for me please? Sorry if they seem stupid, I know you're all experts and I'm a numpty with computers :o

    1) Would this be suitable for my needs, i.e. not bothered about internet connection, just want to be able to use my CD rom programmes and print off images etc for my craft stuff. I've got an HP printer that I can use with it.

    2) Can I use a memory stick with it?

    3) It says it's a netbook. What's the difference between a netbook and a laptop?

    4) Has anyone used Laptops Direct and are they OK to deal with?
  • You can ask buy on surplus computers perhaps..

I'm afraid your CD ROM's will not work with that netbook, because netbooks do not have optical drives! You would need to buy an external USB DVD drive as well.
You seem obsessed with having XP because it will work with your CD's. Any operating system will work with your data CD's. Some older software might not run under Vista or W7, that's all.
Yes, you can use a USB memory stick with it.
Netbooks are designed for portability, hence the cut down spec and 10 in screen, so one seems completely unsuited to your needs.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You're not making a lot of sense Ritzsbags.

Nor on your post in another thread
You can upgraded your computer specs anyway..

This wouldn't be Surplus Computers which when you google comes up with SCAM.

Thanks Macman, see, I don't know much do I :o :rotfl:

I like XP and the local chap who we use whenever we have a computer problem advises to stick with it as he thinks it's better than the newer versions.

My CD roms are programmes which I know run successfully on XP, as I've had them for some time (couple of years or more). And I know my memory stick with my stored images on will work as long as there's a "thing" to stick the memory stick in.

So a netbook is out because it doesn't have an optical drive. Thanks for clearing that up. Do all laptops have an optical drive? Struth, I'm not good at this!

XP is now in 'extended support' and Microsoft will only be issuing critical security updates for it. It's been a good OS, but it's now outdated, especially with W7 being released. Time to move on.

    Thanks again Macman.

I don't mind being outdated :D and if I don't use it for the 'net then I'm thinking XP is OK for my needs.

Sorry if I sound negative, I really appreciate all your help.

My son has Vista, I may take my CD rom programmes round there and see if they work and then if I can get my head around using Vista maybe I can think about that.

If you don't buy XP, then little point in going to Vista, make the move to W7, which is much better than Vista.
