Best to get it to a Gearbox specialist or main dealer?
gearbox specialist. the dealer might have little knowledge about gearbox faults, unless its a common problem that arises under warranty....work permit granted!0 -
how did the fluid get out? seal or damaged case?0

Dont know. The underneath is mostly covered with a plastic panel.
I know the company that changed the clutch didnt remove the gearbox & just pushed it out of the way.
They also didnt bleed it properly so it was very hard to change gear the moment I picked it up at 5pm on a friday & had to have it like it over the weekend until they sorted it monday. They also didnt secure the battery terminal properly resulting in 2 power failures & also left me with no reverse lights because when disconnecting/reconnecting the reversing switch they pulled the cable out of the plug underneath the ECU (resulting in another 2 hours labour somewhere else putting it back in). When I told them a few days after about having no reverse lights they "tested" it & said that is was the fuse or bulbs... Bascially he couldnt be ars*d to correct his mistake knowing the unpaid effort he would have to make...
The whole job took only about 3 hrs!!!.......
They cut corners & I believe this is a result.Not Again0 -

you really need to find out where the fluid leaked from. it could be a result of poorly meshing gears,as you said it wasnt bled properly and gear changes were hard. maybe resulting in extra strain somewhere else causing a bearing/seal failure or causing vibration or force resulting in a crack in the side of the box.
or just a bad coincedence?
im sure by the sounds of it your garage will suggest the later....work permit granted!0 -
Sounds like they did a crap job but I’m struggling to see what they could have done to make the box fail.
Most options would revolve around lack of fluid, either they drained and didn’t refill or they damaged a seal and so caused a leak. These are pretty much ruled out from your description of mechanical failure followed by sudden dump of fluid.0 -
Googling lead me here.

Could be some help if there are answers there.0 -

but if they didn't even remove the gearbox isn't it even less likely they are resonsible for the failure?0

Not according to 2 different landrover specialists I went to today.
It looks like its the IRD that might of gone instead of the gearbox.
Will find out tomorrow or Friday when it goes up on ramps. Not Again0
