I keep chickens and ducks as a hobby. I have asked at all the supermarkets if I may have their thrown away/out of date bread and green vegetables for my poultry - the answer is always, "we are not allowed to give, or even sell, it to you":(0

I thought that most of the larger supermarkets were going to try and introduce some kind of recycling program for the homeless? I have to admit the amount of waste I do every night at tesco is soooo much. Sometimes stupid things, a tiny cut in packaging, one of the yogurts are burst etc.

Sad.
Even worse than damaged packing is the rule that if it's been out the chillers/freezers for more than 20 mins it has to be wasted! I understand fully that supermarkets have to be so careful and that if food is being chilled/thawed/chilled several times bacteria can grow etc. But if you buy a pack of chilled pasta, for example, you might have it in your trolly for half an hour while you do your shopping, more time while you visit the customer cafe, then in your car while you drive home...and you wouldn't dream of throwing it out once you got home because it had been out of the chillers for more than 20 minutes!!
It does make me sad too to see all the waste when there is so much hunger in the UK alone. To be fair, my local supermarkets try to sell the reduced items for as little as possible rather than chuck them out.Optima semper libera sunt

I heard in marks and spencers they dont have reduced sell by dated food they let the staff have it...“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

I have worked for M&S and they do have a staff shop at the end of day, with reduced sell by dated food at a small fraction of the price. Used to get some great bargains.0

They do reduce it for customers, but there is no set reduced section, you just need to spot it on the shelf where the product usually is. After that, anything left is indeed put into the staff sale, but I never go to look as even a 5 minute peek to see what they have results in 30 mins extra being added to your shift, annoying when you didn't buy anything.
I do know that my line manager bought a 1 litre bottle of good scotch for £2 simply because the label was upside down.
Because of their "high quality" reputation, and snobby customers, M&S do waste/reduce/return a lot of food, even if they just suspect that there may be an issue (eg, last night a box containing tins of biscuits was dropped from a height of just 1 foot, result was it being set aside for the staff sale because there was a small chance that the biccies may have been broken)We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -
Sorry if this has been covered, I skipped over a couple of pages of this thread, but has anyone managed to obtain electronics or computer hardware through this method?
I get all my computer parts etc, from freecycle. And I love reusing "old" technology. The other day someone on another forum laughed at my computer specifications, saying "I've got better computers dumpster diving!". At which point I got very mad because I know lots of companies throw out perfectly good PCs and there's nothing I can do about it
I would quite happily have arguments with companies, security guards etc if I could take a ten year old PC out of a bin and make it an internet PC for some family. (I'd never consider breaking locks etc, you understand)
Its the sheer waste that infuriates me more than anything. Wasted food, not really too concerned about it but respect those that do this. But wasted technology?? A real crime in my book

My fridge is stuffed with free food.
Hardly spend any money on shopping.0 -
Very recently a woman was charged for taken food than Tesco had thrown out due to a power cut.
They chucked it out so how could they still own it? surely if you put something in a bin it's anybodies?0 -
