Hi, need some quick help please. For the past 5 months SP (my gas and electricity supplier) have been asking to change my meter as according to them its at the end of its life. Now, to let you understand my meter was new when it was installed 9 years ago when my house was built. I'm also the only owner of the house.

Now:-

I've never missed a payment (paid by DD)
Never had any arrears
Always been with SP (as there is a transco charge?)
....and none of my neighbours are getting these calls and letter and their houses are the same age as mine.

When I questioned SP about this they said it was law, and when I questioned why none of my neighbours knew anything about it (my house isn't No 1, nor am I at start of alphabet etc...) they said they couldn't discuss other accounts. ..... Oh and the guy who turned up previously (the first time) I didn't let in as he had no ID, the second and third appeared both BEFORE I received the letter to tell me they were coming.

What's going on?

We're in same position with British Gas - we're just going to let them change it if they want to. There's no cost to us, although I'm going to be keeping a VERY close eye on our bills!

Thats my worry that the bills will suddenly rocket and why do none of my neighbours know anything about this sort of thing?

They do change the meters after a set number of years.
My electric meter was changes last year for a metric one. Some with the same supplier have been changed but many of the 28 houses on my village close haven't.
It's made no difference to my bills and it's a lot easier to read.

  • Hi,

if you keep refusing entry, they will think you are 'at it', are you?

They will eventually get a warrent of entry, force entry, might involve police and a joiner or locksmith, for which you will have to pay, just let them change it.

Oh, and meters, just like washing machines and cars, can go faulty, for all you know it is maybe running fast.

thre is probably nothing to worry about although your neighbours may not yet have been changed they soon will be. it may just be a problem with a particular model of meter.mehanical or electrical/battery it may just be the type of meter that the engineer had on his van on the day.remember the energy companies are not really that clever.you may be giving them too much credit.also, they are compelled to change them by ofgem..given the choice they would not..cost of meter£100 +.would you??

The bottom line is that it is not YOUR meter, but their meter.

    :p

The older one was dials with the spinning disc, the new one has a digital display with a flashing light. :)
