Kim & Aggie did this a while back without a plunger and with ingredients you would prob already have:

To unblock the sink use White Vinegar , Boiling water ,Bicarbonate soda ( Baking soda) and a bit of salt (for abrasion.)
pour in a cup of baking soda followed slowly by a cup of white vinegar - cover and let it sit for five minutes then pour down four litres of boiling water

dont know if it actually works as I live in a skip.

Cut the bottom from a large fizzy drinks bottle.
    Leave the cap on
Pop a little water in the sink to form a seal around the bottom of the bottle
    Then PLUNGE!

My Mum showed me that, I have never bothered to buy a plunger :T

was going to suggest vinegar and if you have it some bicarbonate of soda! washing soda will work too - unless the trap is really really blocked! in which case you will have to unscrew it and remove gunk manually - yeuchhy job which i usually avoid by vinegar and bicarb - i tip a cup of vinegar down and a good tablespoon of bicarb and leave for an hour minimum - then come back and used hand (in rubber glove) as plunger. works for me!

  • a cloth or old socks in a plastic bag works as a makeshift plunger, basically anything that will seal around the plug hole will do as long as you can move it to force air down.

Can I ask what's gone down the sink recently, as it may have been something that's gone down recently that's blocked it, and it may help knowing for next time to stop this?

  • I'm off to try a couple of these suggestions. My two year old son has blocked ours this morning and I've been trying all day to unblock it.

Right, my dad came round and saved the day! :D Handy having a father that is a plumber lol.

Dave - I did ask OH but he was at work and im very impatient. I like to get things done lol.

So turns out it wasn't anything we did to block it. Over the past years, the previous tenants had used some sort of washing powder in the sink (to handwash clothes i assume). Well it had all built up and formed a kind of cylinder, and then when we moved in on the 21/09 all our draining of water had moved the cylinder and it blocked the pipe.

But he took it out, screwed it all back together and its fine now :D

Thanks for all your suggestions though! :)
