Dog - poorly paw & ear infection - no insurance.

Hi
We recently moved from the IOM and I have just been back for a week to sort some last bits out.
I have come home and my hubby has been looking after our Westie. He is nearly 5. Bailey now appearsd to have a sore leg/paw. He is limping and holds it up sometimes - he doesnt seem to want to move. We have felt it and he doesnt seem bothered - until we get top his paw - and then - he doesnt yelp or anything - but his expression seems to be the problem is in his paw.
He also looks like he has a nasty ear infection and it is all gunky.
We havent sorted pet insurance as yet. We receive child tax credit and a small element or working tax credit. My husband is on a low wage.
So, can I take an insurance out now (today) and get an appt with a local vet this week, with which the insurance will cover it, or is there anywhere I can take him to get looked at that wont cost an arm & a leg? We live in Warrington. xxx

Even if you took a policy out now, there's usually an interim period where you can't make an immediate claim (14 days in most cases I think). Your poor dog cant wait that long, you'll need to bite the bullet and get him seen to asap. Ear infections can lead to some serious long term problems if left.

PDSA - maybe you qualify
EligibilityWho does PDSA help?
The free veterinary care provided by PDSA for owners who cannot afford private vet fees is not limited to dogs and cats - all popular domestic pets are treated, including those described as 'small furries' - rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils rats and mice
What are the eligibility criteria?
To be eligible, pet owners need to live within the defined catchment area of a PDSA PetAid hospital or PetAid practice and must be receiving financial help with their housing costs through either Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit. This means that one in five UK households is eligible for help by PDSA.
Use the PDSA finder to discover the location of your nearest PDSA PetAid hospital or if there are PDSA PetAid practices in your area.
Alternatively, to confirm what help is available in your area or whether you are eligible for free treatment please use the email enquiry form or call 0800 731 2502 our staff will be happy to help.
How do I register for PDSA help?
To register for PDSA help, a person must provide proof of receipt of benefit by showing an award letter from their Council or similar documentation. In addition at PetAid hospitals confirmation of personal identification is required. Once registered, the pet owner is provided with a Client Agreement that they are asked to present each time they bring their pet for treatment.
If you are not eligible for PDSA help
If you are not eligible for PDSA help, it may be worth considering a Pet Insurance policy to ensure you have peace of mind and your pet has the protection they need. PDSA Petsurance offers great value protection and there are three levels of cover for vets’ fees for accident or illness (per condition) from £1,000, £2,000 or £5,000.
Phone today on 0800 980 6000, to apply for a free no-obligation quote or visit PDSA Petsurance.

It does not look like the PDSA will cover you, and no insurance will cover for pre exisiting conditions. I think you had better get him to the vets though, and be prepared that this will cost you, both for the consultation and any medications needed.0

Some vets will let you pay in installments. Be upfront with them but get your dog to the vet0 -

you could try the Blue Cross?
sorry to hear about your poor doggie, but others say, please don't wait x0 -
Please take him to a vet asap. Ear infections are very painful and if left can cause lots of problems.
You could sort some insurance out for future problems, but dont wait to take him to the vet.sonnyboy0 -
PDSA is no good they will not treat existing treatment and they still charge a small fee to join and only certain vets will allow pdsa
I would bite the bullet and take him to the vets and maybe they may take pity and come up with some arrangement where by you pay by instalments
The longer you leave it the worse it may become and the more cost and pain your pet my endure. Good luck hope he recovers very soon0 -
Please take him to the vet, as ears infections can turn very nasty, very quckly and if it gets really bad will really make your dog suffer and end up costing you more. Maybe try offering the vet some money as a deposit and then paying the rest in installments (you never know this may be more agreeale to them, then justpaying in installents, especilly if you can pay off quite a chunk.)0

if the vet wont give you credit, and you really cannot pay upfront, perhaps it is worth looking at whether your overdraft can be extended, or whether you can get a low/zero interest credit card to cover it, if needed...
good luck though - seeing as it is sunday today, if you do need to take the dog in today, do be prepared that it would most likely incur an extra out of hours consulatation charge, and some vets also charge you a fee to register with them out of hours, presumably to stop the service being abused by people who are not regular customers.0
