OP, do you absolutely have to have a car? Not everyone can afford one.

It's perfectly possible that the OP's first language isn't English or the OP is dyslexic.

PJames, if I were you I would pay your mortgage first and foremost. The car can wait. If it isn't taxed take it off road (on your drive/friend's, garage). In the mean time catch a bus until you can afford to run your car. Try walking some of the way to A) get fit and to save on some of the bus fare.

ETA: Do you or your wife have push bikes? Before I got a car I walked, cycled or caught the bus.
