Laptop From Asda. Not Working

In the middle of sept my daughter purchased a laptop from asda. She needed it for her uni studies. She had so much stuff to take by train to uni when she moved away, that she left all the packing at home. She just took the laptop in a laptop bag. She has only had the laptop for about 6 weeks, and it has stopped working. As I said she has none of the packing for the laptop with her, but does have the receipt. Does anyone know what will happen if she takes the laptop back to her local asda in the town she's living in for uni? Will they simply replace it? Or will they send it away for repair? Will they even do anything if she doesn't have the box etc at hand? My daughter needs her laptop to do her uni work. Any help appreciated.

I suspect what ASDA say is going to depend on what is actually meant by 'stopped working' ? Are you saying that it doesn't power up at all ?0

If I had to guess, I'd say a supermarket is going to send stuff like this away for repair. They're unlikely to have anyone on staff in random shops qualified to look at a faulty computer and make any useful comment besides "well its definately a computer, rather than a blender" and even less likely to have workbench space for such a person to work on faulty machines.
While your daughter needs the laptop for uni work, if it already isn't working now then it isn't any less available to her while its sent away for repair. Doesn't hurt to ask for a replacement though... I just wouldn't count on getting too far with that.
I wouldn't expect them to refuse to accept the laptop back for repair based on a lack of packaging. There are some objects (batteries, memory cards spring to mind) whose packaging is basically destroyed in the process of opening them yet you can still return these if they are faulty. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

no error messages?
dead psu by the sounds of it....

As its faulty and you dont have the packaging then thats fine as the store will package the laptop accordingly. Your daughter could ask for a refund but it depends if the store would be willing to do a refund or send it off for repair0

Ask ASDA would be done first if you don't get a reply you like post back on here0

Make sure you've done the various diagnostics checks, e.g. http://acer-uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/313/session/L3NpZC8qd25DSFVMag%3D%3D/sno/0
It'd be rather awkward if they sent it for repair and did something you could easily do yourself!Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

If she really does need the laptop in a hurry, is going backwards and forewards between the store and this site's army of armchair lawyers really the quickest way to put a working one back in her hands? IIRC the store can reasonably opt to repair the laptop at this point, and this will mean sending it away.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Thanks everyone for your advice. It turns out it wasn't the laptop that wasn't working. It was all the electrical items in her uni room except for the main light. The silly girl didn't bother to check anything else. Just noticed the laptop wasn't working and went into panic mode. The uni fixed everything. So, alls well that ends well lol. x0

Surely it would have booted up using the battery in these circumstances?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
