I would have thought a heavy-duty rotary mower would clear most of the high grass. Check with local hire shop and see what they advise.

    Good luck

If you're somewhere rural and your meadow has reasonable access you can get an agricultural contractor to cut it with a tractor drawn mower. Round here they are about 30 pounds an hour - 1/4 acre will take no time at all.

for 1/4 an acre 450 is way to much

hiring a strimmer should be no more than £50 for a weekend

the prob with long grass is it will form tusocks and these will go with regular mowing eventually. the animal option is okay if you have good fencing and a water supply to thr area but 1/4 an acre wont support any animal for long maybe a sheep for about a month at tops no matter how long the grass is also farmers sort of reject the offer due to new animal movement laws etc.

You could always get an african scythe (sowrd shape with slightly bent end) this is very light you can use with one hand and is easy to get the hang of.

do the area methodicaly and rake up the grass as you go or it will seed quicker and be worse next year.

AS a last resort and if access is no prob get your local freindly farmer to get his tractor attached trasher on it it will take about 20 min and be good practice for his 7 year old son!!!!

For a long term solution, after you have cut this lot of grass, it would be worth considering keeping a few hens.
You can see from these photos that a few hens will keep quite a large area of grass reasonable. Compared with the couple of cows and calves they manage to eat a lot more grass than you would imagine. Looks like their being helped by some rabbits I see.
