It depends where you got it from, some companies put a block on the sim untill you phone them, it should say in the paperwork if thats what you have to do.
Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours for your sim to activate0 -

Just checked the paperwork i got, and it says nothing about activating the sim.0 -
If you buy from orange direct, you have to goto https://www.orange.co.uk/activate if i remember, as i had one in September.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Being simplistic is the phone working when you put the sim in? Dial 150 for operator and they should help you if you have problems with the network. If not then try an orange shop for your next step and if that does not work then phone your retailer.0

If it came through the post or TNT ect it'll have a transit block on it to make sure no one can use before you get it.
Call Orange CS, go through security and they'll take the block off, should take about 5 mins.0
