Mother over 65 - but has never had an NI Number...

So you have her NHS no - good. Go back to the NI people and let them have this - it may help them to start the correct paper trail for her.
You need to do this so that she is shown as entitled to a pension on your dad's NI contributions.0 -
A medical card usually has a NINo on it0
-
Now that we know Dad is 63 - she wont be able to claim on his contributions till he gets his state pension at 65 - at least thats one thing sorted.
So she has indeed been getting family allowance since you said she had a book.
We're getting there, slowly, but we're getting theremake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
3. I didnt come here asking for State Benefits - it was the Winter Fuel Grant for over 60s that we are trying to apply for (others mentioned the State Pension etc etc)
QUOTE]
But the Winter Fuel Grant is a state benefit - and your dad, as he is over 60, will also be entitled to it - so they should both receive £125 each. Your dad should also apply for if he has not applied for it before. I take it that he does have a NI no?0 -

For your info, a NINO & a NHS number are two different things. A NHS number would not be relevant in applying for a NINO.

More info about NINO's is here-

How about taking your mum into an Age Concern office, we have one in our town so you may have one in yours. They usually have a benefits advisor and they may be able to take up your mums problem and get it moving for you.
If you've no experience of the benefits system it can be a bit off putting trying to get to speak to the right people
Don't give up. If no age concern, try the citizens advice. The sooner you sort this out, the sooner she will get what she is entitled to.

From my understanding of the NINO allocation process your mother will have to apply for a benefit - she would not get a NINO just because she wants one. If she is entitled to the benefit then a national insurance number will be allocated to her.
Have to admit its unusual that she has left it so long before trying to get one.0 -
Appreciate all your help folks - will update this thread after trying out some of the above0

She does not have to apply for a benefit - anyone of working age (which is where the crux of the matter lies!) can apply for a copy of their NINO from their local Job Centre Plus. Nowdays you have to go for an interview and they issue you one through the post.
You can find all of the details of what she will need here:

if your Mum claimed family allowance for you then HER NINO will be linked to it - it might be worth writing to the child benefit people and asking if they have any records (its a long shot but you may get lucky).
Her NHS card will have no relevance as they are not linked in any way and they have reissued NHS numbers now, so the one she originally registered with will be completely different to the one she has now.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0
