Hungry baby milk sits in the stomach for longer. It's harder to digest - hence giving that fuller feeling.

At that age it is perfectly normal for a baby to wake every 2-3 hours at night. His tummy is smaller than his fist. It's not gonna take much milk to fill it.

"I have heard some people say they have mixed fed ie hungry baby milk at night normal during the day but surely that cant be good for babies digestion. Which is why i dont really want to go with jenhugs suggestion unless i know its safe last thing i want to do is upset his little tummy."

I did it with my children, my sister did it with hers, and many friends have done the same. My daughter was 10lb 4oz at birth, she was on 5 ounces every 3 hours by a week old. I promise you its not harmful. It is perfectly fine. when I started weaning over onto hungry milk, I would put 1 scoop hungry, to 4 scoops normal. if no tummy upset etc increase by another scoop and reduce the normal powder. I once had a mum run up and kiss me after trying it with her child!

i went cold turkey with my son swapping him over, cos we ran out of stage 1 and i sent OH out to get some more just before the supermarket closed, he arrived back with stage 2 saying i kept going on about swapping him over so he thought he was doing me a favour!! i had no choice but to give it to him, and there was no change in him except for going an extra 45+ mins between feeds, nothing. no constipation or belly ache at all.

it is a different type of protein its made with which baby's belly finds it slightly harder to digest so it keeps them feeling fuller for a bit longer. the nutritional content is exactly the same. the only advice HV's can provide on it (cos they arent allowed to recommend any type of formula due to government breastfeeding regulations ) is that you shouldnt give hungry baby before 6 weeks old if at all possible. HTH

ETA - i also switched him between the two quite often when i went out, cos sometimes hungry baby wasnt available in the cartons depending on where i was, and he suffered no ill effects then either, but he did if i changed brand, so if you stick within the same brand i dont think they are much different TBH

The milk for hungry babies isn't stage 2 though - it is designed specifically for stage 1 and has been strictly tested. It is perfectly safe provided you follow the instructions on the tin. Provided that your baby does not have any real reason not to try it, I don't think you have anything to lose - as another poster said, they wouldn't be able to sell it if it wasn't safe! Personally I don't always listen to health visitors etc, I used my own instincts. Advice changes every year on what is suitable/not suitable but really all you need is some common sense. The only advice I followed, was to ignore all the advice and follow my instincts which may have been to take note of what the 'professionals' say but not always!
  • I wouldn't do the controlled crying thing yet cos he is definitely too young for that, and with regards to the waking every 3 hours, he is still quite young, and babies of this age are naturally programmed to wake regularly, to feed, so if you do decide to try the hungrier baby milk there is a chance it may not have the desired effect

try putting a couple of scoops of hungry milk, and the rest normal milk formula. see how that goes. If you swap him straight over he will get tummy ache and probably get constipated.
Sorry, but I would not do this!
Mixing 2 different types of formula!?
Obviosuly it's up to you but no way would I do that, they are seperate for a reason surely

I changed my son from stage 1 to stage 2 hungrier babies formula when he was around 6 weeks old and he took straight to it. He's on cow and gate.

He started sleeping right through the night at the same time and still does now. (Had to wake him at 9ish this morning lol!) He will be 6 months next week and he's about a fortnight into weaning.

You could always try the hungrier baby....get a couple of the ready made feeds to try so that if baby doesn't take to it you won't have to waste a box of formula xx

Don't understand what you mean here?

With cow and gate, there is stage 1, 2 and 3. The hungrier baby one is stage 2.

I think she means that it's still designed for 0-6 month old babies, which it is. I switched straight over from the normal SMA Gold to the hungry baby one when my lo was about 6-7 weeks old and it did him no harm. Was also told by a HV (she was a bit older and came from the no nonsense school of training methinks) that the best way to get a baby to sleep longer through the night is to try and make them wait a bit longer for their last feed of the day i.e if usually they feed every 3 hours, try and make the 9pmish feed half an hour later than it usually would be. Her reasoning was that they will then take more and sleep longer. It depends really on whether you ascribe more to the idea that you want to set your baby a routine, or the idea that your baby will set a routine for him/herself. I went with setting him a routine myself, which some people disagree with, but he's a fabulously happy little boy and I have much more fun with him because I've been getting a full nights rest since he was 7 weeks old!

OP ,like you my [now ex] partner worked away from home and even when he was at home he would never have dreamt of getting up during the night to feed the baby. Therefore it was all left up to me. I took the advice of my Mum, I never even saw a health visitor when I had my 1st baby 21 years ago . They all slept through by 5 weeks and all were the right size and weight ,all were physically healthy.I would check the advice on the tin, if it says it is safe to give the baby stage 2 at his age then I would assume it is safe and decide from there.
