Crystal Spring Deodorant

giddykipper, I use them alot of the time. They are excellent for deodorant purposes but of course do not stop you sweating. If I am going to do something energetic (like clog dancing!) I use something else, but for most days I find them good.
hthWe must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Here's a tip I always recommend to people: stop using expensive deodorant and start using deodorant crystal. I haven't purchased anything else for 10 years, now.
You can buy a deodorant crystal for about £5 and it will last you about 2-3 years!!!!! You run it under the tap and apply to under arms. I PROMISE, you will stay 'pong' free for exactly 24 hours. It's environmentally safe, too. Everyone I know who has tried it is instantly converted.
You can get them from John Lewis, some chemists and even Ebay.
If you're interested in the 'but how does it work' clever bit, here are the details:
When applied, crystal deodorant leaves a minute film of crystallised salts on the surface of the skin. It is NOT absorbed into your body and does not clog the pores, so perspiration continues (which is a good thing - it's one of nature's ways of eliminating waste products).
The crystals have the very special property of inhibiting the growth of odour-causing bacteria.TL0 -
I actually stopped using deoderant on a regular basis when I read about the links to breast cancer.
I hardly ever use it now and if I get a bit hot and sweaty (after the gym or if I've been running around doing housework) I just have a quick shower.
The only time I wear deoderant more regularly is in mid summer. If it's very hot and sticky. Obviously this will not work for everyone as some people sweat more or have more physical jobs than me (and can't shower every time they get a bit sweaty). My friend has a similar job to me and yet she has to wear the strongest deoderant possible as she sweats so much so she couldn't get away with this - I will tell her about this product.
I'll also look into buying one for myself, not to save money but for health reasons. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I currently use Mitchum as I sweat so much, would this be as effective as that.
I work, so can't shower when I get sweaty lol:hello:0 -
Hi Toxic Lemon,
We have a recent thread on crystal deodorants so I've merged your thread with it as it helps to keep all the ideas together.

I was wondering if anyone had used one of these as an alternative to deodorant?

Hi Chell,
We have an older thread on crystal spring deodorants that should help you so I've added your thread into it.

However the other way to cope is to use Triple Dry - which used to be called Linden Voss. It's expensive but you use it for four nights in a row to start with then you only need to use it once a week.
I;m so glad this post has been bumped up, as I had forgotten to come and say thank you.
After reading all these posts, and then investigating Triple Dry and Driclor on the internet, I decided to give Triple Dry ago. (They have just launched a website for online purchases).
I bought it before Christmas, but I remembered someone mentioned something about sensitivity, so I didn't actually start using it until 1st Jan (just in case).
I have to say, it's excellent.
I started with the four nights in a row, and then switched to every other night. At the end of this week I am moving to evry three nights for a week.
I can't believe how effective it is. A couple of days ago I got my bike out for the first time in months and did a 5 mile bike ride, and my underarms stayed dry.
I would thoroughly recommend it.
And thank you to MaryB for suggesting it.0 -
Pitrok, crystal rock deodorants etc are all amonium alum I believe. I have been using them for ages, and they work great. My OH is converted too.
Ok, the plusses:
they last forever
thay are economical
the molecules are larger and cannpot pass into your bloodstream like ordinary aluminium used in most deodorants can. (70% of what you put on your skin ends up in your bloodstream!!)
The active ingredient is non toxic, and can be used in food products.
No smell, so dont clash with your perfume etc.
They dont block up your sweat glands, so healthier (sweat is an important boldily function and essential for removing toxins etc) - Anti perspirants have been linked to breast cancer in some research.
However, a friend of mine, (who is a bit of a big sweaty chap at times), swears blind he has sweated less since using his - his theory being that his sweat glands arent being irritated or anything by anti perspirant, and have thus 'calmed down'!!!
Also, you can buy a spray version, which is basically a little squirty bottle with the crystals in the bottom, topped up with water.
The minuses:
Bit expensive to start off with
They dont mask smell, but prevent it, so you need to be clean when you put it on!!
If you drop them they break! - however, if this happens, put them in a squirty bottle, top up with water, and voila! - deodorant spray!0 -
I'm glad this thread has come back too, I read it ages ago and filed the info in the back of my head. Finally got round to buying a grafton stcik thing for 3.95 from my local chemist (was actually a paid for purhcase as part of a mystery shop hee hee). I have use the stick every day since October after I shower in the morning and have felt clean and fresh every day and my hubbie has promised to let me know if I smell and hasnt done so! Best buy I ever made. Even if it turned out I needed to use a diff deoderant for a few months over the summer this is still a big money saving and its enviro friendly so thanks for the tip I'd well chuffed!Me debt free thanks to MSE :T0
