Any advice about cancelling gym membership?

These are excactly the tactics that LA Fitness are "famed" for. Sales guys are pushed to sell sell sell and will say anything to get you onboard. Once you have signed that piece of paper you are doomed for 12 months. If you cancel before that they will take you to court.
Unfortunately i think this is the same for all major gym chains. What i don't understand is why we have to sign up to a credit agreement to join a gym. I'm not asking for credit from them, i'm asking to join a gym.....Why can I not pay month by month? I honestly believe that they would get more members if they allowed members to pay a month at a time (or maybe 2 months to cut down "administration costs").
I'm now using a council run gym, much better and they're not so much in it for the money as the private ones.
As for you, i think you should talk to the sales guy who sold you the membership and also write to them that you were told you had a 1 month "probationary" period to decide if you liked it or not.0 -
I have just received a nice letter from FF threatening court action because i dont pay my membership. I joined on a 3 month contract and once that time finished i went on holiday effectively putting my membership on hold @ 7.50 a month. now they have got a company called CARS to try and get £350 quid outta me for the whole 12 months because i apparently am still a member for the club that i have not been to for two months. can someone please advise me on what i have to do? is there any one else facing this problem from the club?Scrimping and saving!0

I have spent months fighting LA fitness who insisted my 76 year old father owed them money after cancelling his membership. In the end they passed the debt to a debt collecting company and despite my advise my father eventually paid. These people are nothing but bullies.
Do I counter sue LA Fitness or the debt collecting company???0 -
I have a gym membership with Fitness First, its a 12 month contract and runs out in about October I think. I'm 17 at the moment but im 18 in about 2 weeks, I was wondering if there was anyway I could legally cancel my contract because I was under 18 when I joined...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I want to quit as I do not go enough due to work and school etc etc0 -
Hi there,
I write for a women's glossy magazine called Company and I am looking for women in their 20s or early 30s to tell me about their experiences cancelling gym memberships - negative or positive! Would love to hear more about what happened to you, if you can help please could you e-mail me at: victoria.rolison@natmags.co.uk. Thanks so much! It is against the rules for magazine writers to join up just to get us to contribute to their articles etc.Any TV company, newspaper or researcher that wants to use the boards to ask for case studies needs to specifically have permission....... If approved there will be a note from the MSE team.0

Yeah, but if it gets one over on those damn gym fat cats then it's worth it, surely?0

Depends on your view of sticking to the rules.
How much will she get paid for using all the info she gets (free) from MSE members?0 -
Hi there
I wonder if anyone can advise me.. I've had to cancel my gym membership due to my salary being reduced in this wonderful day and age of the economic recession! So I've written to my gym to advise them that because of this I can't continue with my membership, yesterday I received a letter from them stating that as per my contract I am required to pay upfront the remaining amount for the years membership of £160.
Does anyone know if I am obliged to pay this I had a membership with a gym years ago that I cancelled with no problems...
Can anyone help?0 -
It depends, were you on a 12 month contract? Is a sufferer of SAD, so don't blame me, blame the depressing English weather!!!:beer:0
