Help regarding bid on eBay

I'm considering to bid on something on ebay. At the moment the price is 22pound and got 2 more days to go. The seller has written in the Sellers payment instruction that "I do NOT accept claims for items lost in the post unless Recorded delivery is requested & paid for"
Can he do this?
And how do I request recorded delivery when he has not listed how much it will cost in his postage cost (only 1st class postage stated)?

There are no rules to stop him doing this, but I always do what I can to help a buyer.

If you really want to buy from him, I'd ask him a question about how much recorded delivery is. It should only be 68p on top of the first or second class postage cost. Keep the response, and if you win, make sure he only charges what he said.

You have to be happy to accept his T&Cs.

It's the sellers responsibilty to ensure that your item is delivered.

What is the item or how much is it worth?

You could 'ask the seller' a question to check how much recorded delivery will cost and ask the seller to add that as a postage option on the auction listing.

I disagree with milliejon. If you were to bid and win this item then you would expect to receive the goods you have paid for, if they didn't arrive then you would have every right to make a claim from the seller. And if you paid through PayPal you would be able to do so.

It's been said many times before but the recorded delivery services are there for the sellers protection as well as the buyers, and so personally I think when selling online sellers should only offer delivery by a trackable method.

Paypal won't care about a sellers t and cs where they conflict with their own, it shows the seller is naive or new to ebay and falls outside my comfort zone.

Either pay by paypal backed by a credit card or leave this auction well alone. There may be a reason why the seller is on the defensive even in his listing, and I wouldn't chance it.

    Find a better seller.

Thanks that is good to know.
When I read "I do NOT accept claims for items lost in the post" I got a bit concerned. I have tried to read up on posts here to find out where the buyers stand when items goes missing in the post. I don't want to pay out on an item that doesn't arrive and be at a loss. In that case it is worth paying the extra couple of pence/pound for a recorded item.

How can a seller guarantee his goods are delivered?

If he has offered recorded delivery then its up to the buyer whether they take the offer or not. Some sellers only deliver expensive items by recorded. This person is giving the buyer a choice but saying he wont be responsible for lost items if you choose not to pay the extra for delivery.

I think this is correct. If you dont want to pay the extra either dont pay it or risk it getting lost. I must say that nothing I have sent out yet has been lost but if I was paying what I considered a highish price I'd rather pay for signed delivery than take the risk.

Perhaps this seller has had people claiming his stuff hasnt been delivered in the past. A seller cant win sometimes.

    Greenpixey,

It is the sellers responsibility to get the item to you. It doesn't matter if you pay recorded or not, it doesn't matter what he writes in his terms. As it says above, only pay by paypal backed by a credit card. It is clear that the seller is not aware of his responsibilities. You have the same protection if you pay recorded or not.

greenpixey, a seller remains responsible for items until receipt so any insurance protects the seller, not the buyer. However, many sellers operate a two tier system depending on how the buyer pays. Payment by paypal backed by a card will guarantee a buyer gets their money back as the buyer can always chargeback against the credit card and as sellers know that they will often refund when there are problems just to stop their paypal account being frozen. However cheque or other less secure methods of payment don't have the same leverage as the only way to chargeback is to go through a lengthy ebay claim which costs £15, and so a poor seller may well treat those buyers differently.

As for recorded, as mentioned above it does cost 68p but you cannot assume that is all the seller will add on, I recently saw an auction where recorded delivery cost an extra £3 for some reason.

So, back to my original advice, either pay by paypal backed by a card or walk away.
