Hi all,

I hope you'll forgive me for announcing this to you, as I know some of you would not think twice about it, but I am really proud of myself! I spent;

£7 for oil
£5 for filter
£2 for sump plug and washer (I know I didn't need the plug but I couldn't find the washer alone).

So £14 altogether, hopefully I saved some money!

And I have the confidence now that I can do it again.

:D

Yes that's right - I am already thinking what my next bit of car maintenance will be!

Well done Waterbaby - it's a good idea to get to know some of the easier - but in this case MOST IMPORTANT maintainence jobs on your car.

& not trying to be a spoil sport, but you COULD have got it done for abut the same price at some of the tyre places.

But they might just try & sell you goodness knows how many other things for your car!!

    VB

PS Guess you've a Ford & the washer n plug were combined - this'll make it easier to remove next time - some cars plugs get a bit mangled after a few oil changes!

But then I wouldn't have the newly acquired knowledge and satisfaction that I have tonight.

    Well done.

Oil changing is one of the messiest jobs to do if you get it wrong, like a drive full of oil!!!!

I've not paid a garage to change the oil on any of my cars for more than 10 years, maybe more.Make sure that you have got the right grade of oil for your car,and depending on what car it is and the amount of mileage you do,change it at more frequent intervals than what the manufacturer recommends. And buy quality, not supermarket pap.

I currently run a Peugeot 406 2.0l Hdi,and I change the oil every 6k,which is a lot less than what Peugeot recommend.I do it for the simple reason that on a diesel,if they are changed more regularly, the engine tends to like it better, and lasts longer. This also applies to the fuel filter and oil filter. It is also better come mot time for emissions.

So now that you've done the oil,it may pay you to look at changing the air filter and fuel filter, (If it's got one) if they need doing. And then finally, look at/change the anti freeze.

May seem like your spending money, not saving it,but preventitive maintenance is cheaper in the long run.

    Ken.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Hope you disposed of the oil correctly and not just down the drain.

Of course! I took it to a household waste disposal/recycling centre, and put it in their oil tank.

Well done. I have never attempted this because of lack of equipment, safety factor and also that it is relatively inexpensive to get it change at national tyres; costing £15-£25 for full synthetic and oil filter.

That said, I've always been told that changing for cheap oil every 5000miles is better than using CastHams Super XLRDS at 10000 mile intervals. Of course, using good oil at regular intervals is the ideal, but if you want to make a saving somewhere ...

Most of my mileage is longer distance, and I always nurse the engine until the oil temperature is at least 80, so I can get away with being a bit of a cheapskate. If you do lots of short journeys on a cold engine, that's where a 'better' oil will reduce wear.
