The student edition is the full home premium. Upgrade or no upgrade.

    (1) Backup everything you need! Important. Transfer to external harddrive, USB stick or burn to DVD's.

    (2) Go into the dell bios setting and make sure the boot up sequence it set at - to boot up by CD / DVD rom first! Usually set at harddrive!

    (3) Save and exit.

    (4) Put in the 64bit Windows 7 disc! Restart.

    (5) Voila. Follow the instructions / setup as normal.

    (6) Add product key.

    (7) Login on to the internet and download the updates.

Should be as simple as that.

To be honest, I have not seen much difference to the 64bit version of windows 7 and vista 32bit. Only difference is that the browser is faster. Other pitfalls include adobe flash player does not work on 64bit IE8. But you can use 32bit IE.

    .

    Might i add:

    (8) Install a reputable antivirus product and update that too

->will probably be doing this just before "(7) Login to the internet" too but i'm perhaps a bit too paranoid :p

Dont know if this is hi jacking this thread

Have daughter who has received her download , and I thought I should burn a disk for her to use as a back up.

How big is the download ..... not such a silly question as some is compressed
and I wondered if I should unzip then burn .
    So I did :D

But after reading latest problems with Student download, downloaded it again.
Now she has two folders , some of which is 'unpacked'
one is over 4.5 GB the other 2.48 Gb which one should I burn ???
Will the larger folder be the 'bootable'

If she is away , at Uni . and she needs to reinstall, trying to make it as easy as possible,
