Cant install windows 7 ?

Hi everyone i brought Windows 7 on the student offer of £30

but...

it just wont install

I looked it up online and it seems everyone is having the same issue with that student download.
I did order the discs but im so excited does anyone know how i can do a clean install ( as im going from windows 32bit to 64 bit) with the download link we got given so i can get it up and running and get playing :T

When you saying going from 32bit to 64bit - is your cpu 64bit?

No its windows vista 32 bit on both my pc and laptop , so i guess thats why i need to do the clean install but im so excited i cant wait for the discs, the download doesnt work .

But is your computer 64 bit?

If not, you won't be able to install the 64 bit version.

Oh yer sorry they are, they both brand newish pcs xps 730 and laptop , i asked dell if i could upgarde to 64 bit from 32bti before i brought it they said i could.

as far as i am aware you cannot do a clean install of windows 7 with an UPGRADE disc...as windows 7 needs to see an operating system on the drive to be able to upgrade it..

unlike vista and xp when you could put ya old OS disc in the drive to show you had a valid copy to UPGRADE..

so to do a full clean install of 7 you will need a FULL copy NOT upgrade copy........

The original version of the student-only Windows 7 installer—which is packaged differently than other Windows 7 installers and can only be used to upgrade existing Windows versions—would hang if you attempted to go from 32-bit to 64-bit. Oddly, the error was purposefully created, because Microsoft does not support in-place upgrades from 32-bit versions of Windows to 64-bit versions. (This has always been the case; it's not a new Windows 7 issue.)

Now, Microsoft says it has offered a 64-bit upgrade path via a more traditional installer that can perform a clean install of a 64-bit version of Windows 7. So those students that wish to go 64-bit can return to the download site and grab the new version if they're having issues.

so it looks like you will have to download it again so you get the latest version with the new installer........

Actually if OP had an upgrade DISK would be v straightforward to do a clean install and no previous version of windows would be needed:

I believe its only the student download that generally has problems

as per vista no difference between the FULL and UPGRADE versions
