London rents to be capped at £1250

that poor woman MP who is working at the House of Commons on a late hearing will now have to go on the tube, then the train and get herself home from Central London instead of being able to live in London or have her train fares expensed..
it will mean less women MPs at the end of the day.
it's a shame really, some women do have something valuable to add
No, it means they'll reform the stupid laws that says they start work much too late, and finish much too late.0 -
Forget the rentals part a min, carol didn't really focus on that.
It could well be a harsh reality check for MP's.
If they only have £1250 a month (I say only, sounds lovely to me to spend on rent!) in London, then they will have to live like the rest of us. OR, like the rest of us, THEY will have to stump up the extra.
I think what Carol is saying, is it will be a big culture shock to some MP's to see how the "other half", i..e us, live when they find themselves looking for a place within that budget.
That, in itself, could lend to some MP's changing their outlook somewhat on various aspects of life....especially when they find their troughs less full.0 -
what would £1250 a month actually rent you in london??MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

They don't actually have to rent in London for the £1250, only within commutable distance....like other long hours London workers.
Its perfectly possible, for example, to have a flat share relatively centrally for around £500. Many professional adults do, or lodge, particularly those with family/other business/interests outside London. They could have MP flat shares or share with other people: which would inturn help them have a guage on other working people's life demands. As would being the renting part of the rent-a-room scheme.
I'd like to say that all makes me feel like the goose who is about to share her family sauce......but I doubt very much it would come to that.
The link below is a rightmove search on a 30 mile (easily London commuter zone) for £1250 pcm.

£1250/month would get you a bottom of the range family house out in the less pleasant suburbs, or a studio or 1 bed within walking distance of Westminster.0

But this specific detail re capped rents in London will have the effect of making MPs far more aware of how expensive renting is in London - once they see exactly how far their £1250 will take them.
it won't affect London rents one bit, there are only 600 odd MP's that is a fraction of the tenants in London. MP's aren't the only people who rent property in London.
they'll all continue the same and get some other subsidy or other and pay the difference between their actual rent and the £1,250 out of their own pocket.0 -

my mistake the thread title was "London rents to be capped at £1250" that implies something else.

London rents for MPs living over 1 hour away are to be capped at £1250 - AND this is to be imposed on MPs without a vote.
Fatastic news. Obviously, the fact that MPs expenses are to be curtailed generally is great news for taxpayers generally.
I think you are missing the bigger picture.
There's a budget deficit approaching £200,000,000,000 and you're worrying about a few grand in rental allowances. Better to worry about how the Government is going to guarantee your pension and future healthcare as they've promised to do.0 -
Generali is right.
It's about time the Government of the day (whichever one) were given a fiscal target by independent auditors. This target would have 1; 3 and 5 year milestones and so on. The target would be based on the ABILITY of the country to pay in the current climate, not some flimsy notions based on social justice, equality etc.
Then....we can reward MPs based on how well they get us towards this target.
I've no problem with making MPs wealthy if they make the country wealthier. I do have a problem with detached MPs getting considerable reward regardless of how much they put us 'in hock'.0 -
carolt, can you please edit your title to include MPs only please as it gives the wrong impression for people who are browsing through the forum. Many thanks0
