The BIOS will have an option to request a password on boot up. Having the system ask you for the password on boot up isn't the default option so resetting the BIOS will revert back to the factory default settings. It won't clear the password but it'll stop asking you for it.
If it's an Award BIOS try award_sw that used to be their default password.0 -

Sorry, getting my latitudes mixed up..
This is the service manual..
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd600/sm/sm_en2.exe
extract the files to a directory, click on index.htm, then reserve battery..
remove the main battery, then the reserve is hidden under a flap in the main battery recess.
If the original owner has set a hard drive password, you may have to ring dell up. Provided that the laptop isn't registered as stolen, they may be able to help you.

If you both the main battery, and reserve (bios) battery, and you are still getting prompted for a password, then it is likely to be a HD password, removing the HD as well, and trying to boot should confirm this.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
