Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me with a little pickle im in.

Im with o2 on an 18 month contract due to upgrade very soon (early upgrade now - contract expires in Jan) I currently have an iPhone 3G which im very happy with. Now my pickle is do I upgrade to the Palm Pre or iPhone 3gS (I personally dont feel there is any point in upgrading to either of these as im very happy with iPhone) or do I not upgrade at all.

Im sick of not getting anything for being a loyal customer, would it be worthwhile to let my contract expire then go out and find one of these contract that you get a PS3 free with contract (phones 4u) paying the same contract as im paying at the minute. Do you think this seems a possibility or should I just go down the normal lines and upgrade to the latest model?

Well the price you pay per month is to help cover the cost of the phone, i mean some shops sell the IPhone 3GS at close on £1000. What you could do is request your PAC code, which is an intent to leave the operator and go elsewhere. Good timing as orange are doing the IPhone now too.
Hopefully 02 will contact you to offer an improved contract like 1/2 price or less.
With Vodafone i got them down from £45 to (£19 + a new phone), went with orange in the end but it does work.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Good advice, I dont think ill ever leave o2 as ive been with them for 10 years or so. I think I currently pay £35 a month so would love to pay less.

As for the PS3 option I guess I could try saving with the spare cash instead!

Has anyone else got any opinions on either Pal pre or iphones 3Gs or not upgrade at all?

The Palm Pre although decent isn't really worth the Iphone-esqe tariff, I'd steer clear for the time being. If you are happy with the Iphone then I'd move to SIM only at 20 quid a month and see what happens regarding Orange/Vodafone and the Iphone tariffs. I suspect that O2 will drop their tariffs to whatever Orange tariffs are immediately, but still they won't be anywhere near the value of the SIM only tariffs offered by O2.

In summary, only upgrade if you really want to as the tariffs on both the Pre and Iphone are very expensive for what you get.

Very very helpful post, I was looking to go to the sim only tariff then ill have the option to go to which ever tariff I want to with only a months notice. Would upgrading to say the palm pre and then selling the palm pre be a good option? obviously keeping the 3G?

Not really- you'd likely get around 350-400 quid for it as it's locked to O2 I would gather. You'd then be left with a 35 quid a month tariff that is far worse than a 20 quid SIM only tariff. The gains would be very minimal if at all.
