If you go to https://www.spotify.com/en/products/overview/ you have 3 sign-up options. It seems that the 'free' one gets ads, the 'paid for' option doesn't.

OK shaun, it must have changed over the last few weeks, as I signed up using that link at the time of the original posts.

You just need to use the correct url...

https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/

...allows you to set up an account and then download the software with no invite.

You'll need to either be in one of the supported regions or or a proxy that is for it to work though (I think)
