Congrats mhags on the ozzie status. Not that you'll catch us in the medals mwahahaha
Hello everyone quick update from dd. Yesterday (goodness was it only yesterday?) got up at 4:30 to leave at 5am to get the edinburgh to gatwick so #1 has to be xoh and dd2 kindly getting up to take me to the airport (dd2 came to keep her dad company on the return trip)
2) flight delayed cos they'd forgotten to bring plane over from where it spent the night. So watched some tabletennis and some bowls
3) arrived in antigua late so major stress about grtting through luggage collection, checking in (system wouldnt do it in edinburgh) and to departure gate in time for 5:10pm only to find hurricane bertha had closed down dominica airport. The good thing? Met very nice young woman from dominica embassy in brussels who kept me smiling
4) we shared a taxi and a twin room, had a light supper and in bed by 9pm (so 2am uk time)
5) back to airport 4am on standby to find flight full groan. The good thing? A group of 6 of us laughed a lot, breakfast opened at 8, free wifi in departure lounge and they put on an extra flight
6) 10am took off, into dominica 10:40. Felt slightly icky landing, but not bad flight, and torrential rain that saw the 5:10 flight had all gone
7) taxi driver was waiting for me (always consoling)
8) hour long drive to appartment at ross house in portsmouth. Road rather wiggly and no air con but very beautiful
9) appartment is lovely - cant work out how to use cooker to heat water but have trusty travel kettle so 2 cups of tea have helped me feel human
10) contact has been in touch to say although other ross colleague hasnt made it in (the storm is moving north closing airports and seaports in its wake) she will pick me up at 6pm
11) wondering whether lunch or nap more needed (currently 1:30pm) - very much appreciating having the choice
12) watched hotel budapest on long flight over - very good
13) listening to newsquiz extra - hooray for the vpn
14) i'm here hoorayMrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

Here are mine for today. Yesterday's gone!
1. Breakfast in bed courtesy of DH, lovely marmite toast and fried eggs.
2. Free tea with friend in w8rose, good while it lasts, I read somewhere that they might stop it.
3. Bargain goats cheese, reduced to 45p/100g. Got 3 pieces.
4. Helped DH oil the new worktop, it looks lovely oiled.
5. Instead of buying fish and chips we decided to be really OS. I made hm chips, saut!ed courgettes and fish fingers. Pudding was a few pieces of cooking apple with two rescued plums on the turn, cooked to a compote, served with yogurt. Lovely meal.
Good night. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Ampersand - I asked brother of Frith before reading your post about the shooty bits. So I'll ask him again tomorrow and pass on the new info!
In short, he said this is the wrong time of year for any vicious pruning (that should be done in the winter) but it is OK to lop off thin bits, twigs at an inconvenient height that might poke you in the eye as you walk past and any less than THAT thick (he put thumb and finger about 2cm apart!)
Busy day again today! Sons back tomorrow. :-)
It has been a day of gentlemen!
1) Day kicked off at 12.30am with what sounded like 2 policemen in my garden (I was in the bath, where I always seem to be when disaster strikes!!) I heard someone says "XT163747 to control" so got out of the bath mighty quickly.
Got downstairs to see MrN's house in complete darkness. First responder car outside (takes so long for ambulances that there are trained up people and luckily one lives in the next village). Presumed it was MrN's poorly son4 but nothing happening there except MrN peering out of the window and seeing me looking out of mine!
I sent a message to Mrs Downhill neighbour - no reply. Turned out that she and many friends had gone to a beer festival leaving one friend at home as she wasn't feeling great. This poor friend had taken a turn for the worse and had to call an ambulance! Mrs Downhill knew nothing until she got my weird message asking if she wanted help as I'd spotted the ambulance! All OK now.
2) A bit of a lie in after that lot.
3) Swimming with my brother.
4) Finished the garden! A bit of a hack back of stuff in the little strip by the road.
5) Took various bits I had been borrowing back to mum and dad's.
6) Went to the tip to drop off accumulating pile of rubbish. I had left it by the corner of the house, just within view of the road..... Yesterday I put 3 mouldering deck chairs on the pile - bigger son had sat down heavily and ripped the canvas of one. This morning, they had all been stolen!! Hope they enjoy sitting on those!
Someone else (ages ago) had dumped 2 small bags of plaster on the pavement by my house so I thought I'd take those too. Cue helpful gentleman number 1 as both bags were damp and split in/all over my car. He was looking quite suave and well dressed - a little less so after he'd helped me.
7) Went to the allotment to water the greenhouse and got potatoes for smaller son's birthday meal, more courgettes and onions.
8) Sainsburys without sons! I had not been for 3 weeks so had run out of all sorts of things so a major shop. Helpful gentleman number 2 helped me chose a birthday cake (a Sainsburys man) and ended up telling me about the forthcoming overhaul of the store.
9) More cleaning - determined to get everything done! Did my room, stairs, kitchen...
10) Painted over goodness knows what food I spattered up the kitchen wall.
11) Went to get pie and chips from the van in the village and it was shut! But gentlemen 3 and 4 re-opened for me, found me a pie and chips and even gave me a leftover pie which I shall have tomorrow!
12) Enjoying watching Dolly Parton at Glastonbury at the moment.
13) Sewing on of name tapes is over.
14) Today 11 years ago, I was just going into the 42nd week of pregnancy....0 -
1. Enjoyed watching the rain fall and DD's excitement at how much the back path was 'flooding'!
2. We watched my choice of film tonight, Swallows and Amazons. The book is way better, but it was a good re-introduction.
3. Taught DD 'Honest John' dominoes game, she really enjoyed it
4. Lovely trip to the library, DD has finished the summer reading challenge (is up to about 25 books recorded online!) and we chatted with the library aunty about what she'll be dressing up as for this year's award ceremony
5. Read my class' reports and, if nothing else this year, they will get reports with correct grammar and punctuation - oh and with the correct names in each! I would have been offended if I'd been any of the parents in the class, so at least I know I will do a better job on the presentation and proof-reading! It was good to get to know a bit more about them, and feel excited rather than scared at how much I have to do!
6. Mummykins made me a lovely low-carb dish for dinner, shame it was just the one, another was too salty for words. So, I had a delicious plate of cauliflower......good job I like cauliflower eh?
7. Have eaten nearly my body weight in watermelon today, nomnomnom.
8. Send DD into the supermarket to get a last-minute item for lunch so that I could stay with the car and fend off the traffic warden. First time, my baby did well. I know she's 9, but I'm untieing those apron strings s-l-o-w-l-y
Hugs to Sparrer, thinking of you xx0 -

Yesterday was a much better day.
1. Made a start in my new bit of garden with a small vegetable bed - it takes ages to dig over weed and then sieve to get rid of the stones.
2. Spoke with friend on phone.
3. Ironing done.
4. Saved £5 on some necessary shopping.
5. DH feeling more confident re work prospects. He is self employed and when business is quiet but it generally is at this time of year.0 -
Dundee Doll you are such an intrepid traveller! I admire your sense of adventure .
I am posting early and sitting on my sofa in my office enjoying the last bit of sunshine before it heads around the corner of house and then sets in an hour or so.
It was a beautiful frosty morning. Was 1o when I got up around 7am....I was soon out and about taking photographs of all things frosty! It always takes me by surprise here!
Toasty toast for breakfast and roaring log fire on in cafe, mooches through the papers.
Went to buy a wardrobe for DS. Everyone else has fitted wardrobes in their room, his was a cheap temporary affair that has inwardly collapsed after 2.5 years. Paid a deposit as they didn't have the one we wanted in stock.
I'd told him if we got permanent residency he could get a new wardrobe as our house back home has fitted wardrobes!
Back home and did some ironing whist listening to UK radio.
Went a walk with OH and stopped in at our local cafe , had a very yummy pumpkin quiche and salad for a late lunch.
Popped into library on the walk back , got a couple more magazines from the swap box and borrowed some books. I've not been reading much lately . I go through fits and starts with books, will read, read, read all the time and then stop. But need to get back into reading again....keep my brain active!
Think I might just make pumpkin soup and some soda bread for tea...it's soupy kind of weather !
Have a lovely Sunday0 -
For yesterday
-I went swimming, which did me the world of good.I hardly swam in July,as the weather here has been atrocious.Mind you,it's nice swimming in the rain.So I'm planning to visit the pool every day...:)
-I made a compote with some very sad-looking apples.
-I've started on a new book.
-lots of paperwork sorted out and tidied away.
-spoke to a friend on the phone, and planning to meet up next week.
-I found a kitty whisker on the bed.I collect them and put them in a clear plastic bag.
BTW,for anyone with a furry, feline companion,do you know that if you find any thick claw sheaths on the ground/bed/wherever,you can give them to kitty as a sweetie treat.Cats will eat them as they are a good source of calcium. My kitty never seems to notice them herself, but if I pick it up and put it in front of her, she'll gobble it down.
I've got one final Smokie story to share. We lived in a detached house with two bedrooms on the first floor and a sloping roof at a 45 degree angle. In one of the bedrooms it was possible for Smokie to get out onto the roof if the window was left open.He used to do this a lot in the summer months, and would be right up on the top of the roof, often at one of the ends, swiping away at any passing birds. My sister and I would be frantic, shouting 'Mummy,Daddy,Smokie's on the roof again!',and one of us would race off to wave an opened tin of catfood out the window,to try and entice him back in.Such drama!
I don't think that he ever caught a bird though.0 -
Nope, giving up. Having an & moment0

Pleasures for today while it is still quiet....
1) A lie in!
2) Listened to the Archers Omnibus.
3) In the "get all cleaning done extravaganza", did the living room including polishing the annoying tiled floor.
4) Made a courgette quiche and courgette brownies. These will complement the courgette soup made the other day. I think I detect a theme...
5) Cleaned the bathroom!
6) Went to the local woods where, a few years ago, the forestry commission left a mountain of wood chippings. I think it is safe to say that most gardens in a 5 mile radius have some chippings! The paths of my allotment are made from them. Anyway, got 2 bin liners full to replenish the bit where the water butt and log storage space is.
7) School friend is on her way over.
8) SONS ARE COMING HOME! 6.30 :-)
9) Smaller son has set his alarm for midnight. :-/ At midnight, he will be 11. :-)0
