I looked at the literacy and numeracy but didn't realise she could do all three levels for free.
the literacy and numeracy is free but it gets a bit more complicated if she wants a full level 2 or full level 3 for free - and it's a LOT of work - she would be looking at doing 5 GCSE's at the same time, probably in a year.

She's got either an E or a G in English but no Maths as she basically didn't go.
okey dokey - not an issue at all. She would have the assessment and there are 5 levels, Entry 1,2 or 3 and then Level 1 and then Level 2. I wouldn't like to guess as it's not fair but I would, in a sweeping statement say she might come out at an entry 3 or level 1 for literacy, can't really say about maths if she didn't attend, but whatever the level, that's fine. She can work up them all up to Level 2 if that's what she wants to do.

She's been in a bit of trouble but has been behaving for the last 3 years. I've told her if she goes she needs to not slack, and that doing the classes and getting the qualifications will help her get a job (she can't get one at the moment-think that the . lack of qualifications is stopping her right now) Have told her to get my other sister whom she lives with to write down what she needs to ask about if she phones or goes in. If she does them, I'll be justifiably proud.
and so you rightly will be :T . The main thing to remember is that it is not like school -it's all adults of different backgrounds, all there for different reasons. The first session is nervewracking but after a few she will be going into class with confidence and making friends.

Oh, do they still provide you with help if you're dyslexic? She's pretty badly dyslexic and didn't get any realy help at school, so that didn't help as she got bullied and called thick (so making her not go)

yes, there is help. Mention it when asking for an assessment. It will be taken into consideration. There are a range of ways she can be supported - coloured overlays (if she knows if one helps), 1:1 help in the class with a support worker or a voluntary tutor and extra time on the exam. All seen before, all catered for. There are lots of people with dyslexia who enrol on the literacy courses in particular - there is every chance she wouldn't be alone in having the condition in her class - it's often why learners are there - because of issues when younger.

    Here's a useful link

    http://www.move-on.org.uk/

she could have a go at some of the mini tests - tell her it doesn't matter what the outcome - it's all part of finding the best level for her to start with.

I would start with asking for an assessment for a literacy and numeracy class and work from there.

Hmm, trying to think if she'd do 5 GCSE's...she'd probably do Maths and English...not sure on languages....maybe drama, general studies (if they still do it) and something that's not too hard but not stupidly easy. Will save the link and give it to her when she's on MSN again.

It would be a big undertaking for 5 GCSE's in a year (rather than 2) in addition to her day to day life. You would also need providers (ie college or adult learning) who are offering the GCSE's she chooses - lots are cancelled before they start due to low take-up. Popular ones are maths, english, science, french , spanish and art where I work.

It depends what she wants to do - if she wants to do hairdressing and beauty, she might as well look to enrol on an NVQ intro course rather than doing a load of GCSEs in non-relevant subjects. She could to the literacy and numeracy certificates as well as the introduction to NVQ hairdressing course - say, starting in January - and then in September she could do the first year of the hairdressing nvq and the anatomy and physiology course at the same time if she wanted to be a beautician as well. Year 3 would be the second year of her hairdressing nvq and one or 2 of the beauty modules.

However my CDC stupidly said if you want something it would be a good idea to have it while out of ketosis. If she hadnt planted that thought I would have been fine! So I had so much rubbish I felt ill on friday all day,

Just because someone says it's better to lose a leg than a head, this is not a recommendation...

He's far from thick, but not very academic if you know what I mean.

He's full of scientific stuff - he can tell you which way is north by looking at the moss on trees, but ask him to write a story, and he'll be there forever.

I just hate to think of him struggling :o

    Can he use a keyboard?

elfen - something else I've just remembered - your sister would have to commit to an 80% minimum attendance on each GCSE course. It's something to think about if she thinks she might lose interest along the way or life chucks something at her and she can't attend for a couple of weeks here and there.

Well there's another option. For example I'm clumsy, with large hands, so I know I'm never going to be a natural-born calligrapher - but I can use a keyboard pretty well.
