PC keeps rebooting itself

Options
My PC keeps shutting down and rebooting. It's not overheating (checked this because of a tip on the techie forum). Any ideas on how to stop this happening? It's got Windows Professional on it - don't know if that's part of the problem.

Could well be a virus. Is your anti-virus up-to-date? If not, run an online scan

Yep, it could be a virus, or it could be an error in the operating system!
Is it attually shutting down (showing the windows is now shutting down screen ) then rebooting, or just rebooting randomlly

It just reboots - no warning just a blank screen then it starts itself up. I have Zone Alarm for security. Don't know about a virus but will try the online scan provided by BB.

Okay, in that case its a program causing it to reboot or an os error. By deafualt windows is set to reboot insted of showing the bsod, so if its started happening resently, uninstall the last program / driver, or go back to a restore point that windows creats every now and then and see if it sorts the problem!

    Thanks Tom :-)

    Try scan with Housecall.

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    Also, do this:-

    1) From the desktop right click on My Computer.
    2) Click the Properties option.
    3) In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab.
    4) In Advanced click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
    5) In the Startup and Recovery window uncheck the Automatically restart check box.
    6) Click Ok.

This will take this out of the equation. The blaster virus (big virus some time ago) also makes computers reboot without warning.

    Download this and scan....

if you don't already use active virus protection , I'd recommend Avast Home edition.

completely free, and imo one of the best free anti virus progs out there.
you might also want to try Xcleaner to clean up any ad/spyware that may be affecting your comp.

let us know how you get on ;)

Sounds like the power supply cant cope.

Buy another from ebuyer for about £15 and haul your current one out.
