Lovefilm are definitely better and much less hassle. A friend of mine had real trouble cancelling an Outnow free trial, in the end they had to pay for a month before they could get out of it.

You can get 30 days on Lovefilm too if you go via... http://www.choosedvdrental.co.uk/dvd-rental-review/lovefilm.asp

Also if you have left Lovefilm after being subscribed for a while every now and then they will offer you 3 months for price of one.
I've been in and out of my account several times in that way only making use of the 3 months then leaving again.
I just had another such offer but since I'm going to be away for most of April I'll have to let that one go. Maybe next time..
My advice is to use them for a month after the free trial and quit. Then wait for their 3 for 1 offers to come.
Alternatively keep a look out on the forum for the 3 for 1 voucher codes.

Lidl is just one of those 'too-cheap-to-be-any-good' kind of outfits, bit like their food.
I beg to differ
Their luxury muesli beats the hell out of Tescos and all the other chains put together. I could name a few other items I get there that don't exist elsewhere

Do you have the 3 for 1 code? (If it's not specific to you)

I have only had a 2 for 1 offer from them but just tried to use it and it's expired.

Thanks.

• Hi,
Did anyone else sign up for the 30 day free trial at Lidl and then have the money taken out of your account on the same day??

I just want to know if that's normal before I kick up a huuuuuuuge fuss!

Thanks

• I'm currently trialing Lidl Movies, LoveFilm and Cinema Paradiso...

Brief review:

So far I'm not experiencing bad service with Lidl Movies...a couple of returns went missing and they were nice enough about them...being wary of that I've started getting proof of postage for every return to them now.

They dont have a massive selection of BD's...back catalogue is basically non existent but they do seem to be getting the new releases ok...

I also got an extra week because of the lost disks....

LoveFilm definitely have the largest collection....plenty of world cinema that I'm looking for and reasonably quick with dispatch. They do throttle depending on the day you return so you don't get too many a week!
I got a free 3 month trial and have certainly got a lot out of it so far!
Major issue is the dispute with Universal resulting in a lot of new releases not becoming available.

Cinema Paradiso have probably been the most consistent so far...their free trial went well and I'm currently on their unlimited 3 disk plan without issues.
They're quick to allocate and send disks...not as big a collection as LoveFilm and I haven't been in touch with Customer Services but so far so good!

as usual....YMMV!

If Lidl is, in reality, Outnow, as of today their website is down and their freephone number is unobtainable. I know as I am sadly with Outnow!

I subscribed to Lidl Movies in October 2009 after seeing ads for their low cost DVD rental service. I chose the unlimited 3 disc option.

So, what has my experience been? The first thing I should point out is that I can't compare it to any similar services - 'cos I haven't used any others.

Generally, I'm satisfied. I've had over 130 DVD titles, which averages out at 4.8 titles per week. I certainly haven't experienced the problems reported by some other users here and in other forums.

Here's my verdict. The points are listed in no particular order. You'll also see that some items are listed in both the 'good' and 'less good' categories. Read on...

The good things:
- the choice. There's loads. How many I don't know (they claim over 65,000), but certainly there are very few films that I've been unable to find. I can't comment on BluRay titles, only DVDs

- speedy service. Turnround is fast. Further DVDs are sent on the same day that returned titles are received, and have always been delivered the following day

- the price. If you watch a lot of movies it's good value: I'm retired so have plenty of time. For me, it's working out at roughly 66 pence per title

- response to problems. The few that I have had (see below) have been dealt with speedily, and response to email contact has been prompt and courteous

- the website. Clear, easy to navigate, with options for just about everything

The less good:
- the choice. Some DVD titles are not well represented - one example is BBC series. Or perhaps it's that they're not easy to search for...

- the warehouse operates Monday-Friday, which restricts the number of mailings it is possible to receive per week

- a number of discs have 'gone missing' when returned. I reported two return mailings (3 discs in each) as missing, and also one return of 3 discs was recorded as only 2 discs received. This last problem was clearly a warehouse error, and I also later learned that one of the 'missing' returns was received later the same day that I reported it. The website makes reporting 'missing' discs easy, I have not been charged for these discs, nor had to complete any forms, and it has caused no problems other than injecting a few days wait into the turnround cycle. After some email correspondence, I got a 'free' week added to my account, so a reasonable response there.

- I have *never* received any titles marked as 'top priority' in my list. It's not clear why this is, other than there are very few of them (2 TV series and a couple of fairly new titles). But do I have a long list of other wants, so I'm really in no desperate hurry...

- the website. Some areas are not updated as often as they should be. For example, the list of award-winning films looks thin on the ground and doesn't seem up to date. The films are in the database - but just not highlighted separately.

The bad:
- err, nothing really.

What else can I say? I have received one unplayable disc, which was promptly dealt with. Generally the quality of the discs is good, although there are more light scratches than on my own discs, but I guess that's only to be expected on rental copies.

The warehouse location changed during my subscription period from Northants to Glos. During this period, the contact phone number temporarily went missing from the website, and there was also a notice about delays in dealing with emails. Neither affected me directly, and I've never needed to phone them.

When a title is on two discs (examples are 'special editions' or epic movies), both discs are sent and counted as a single item, which is good. I understand from comments elsewhere that some services don't do this.

As far as other users' unflattering comments about the service go, I honestly haven't experienced the same problems. Perhaps it's that my movie tastes are wide ranging and I don't expect to see the latest release as soon as it appears. And a hint for anybody who has trouble finding movies to watch: try looking through the IMDB Top 250. I'll lay odds that there are very many you haven't seen :)

I'm a satisfied customer.

Hope this info helps someone.

i to have cancelled ahead of time with my lidl trial, i tried countless times through every form of communication they had to try and resolve a lost disc. but just kept being told contact customer services errr well i am!!! so in the end i cancelled, i have my confirmation email that the account is closed. i would not reccomend lidl movies to anyone, stick with love film or cinema paradiso. im not struggling for trials ha ha i might try empire or blockbuster next

The current address is:
FREEPOST RSKB-JSLA-XJKY
Unit 9
Lancashire Enterprise Business Park
Leyland
PR26 6TZ

[Aside: I think it's on a newish business park on the old Leyland Trucks site]

And as far as other people saying they haven't had good service etc, then I can only repeat that I'm still a satisfied customer. The DVDs arrive swiftly, returned discs are turned round and new items despatched the same day, and I'm never without films to watch.

Since I posted earlier, I have had to contact them over a missing disc in a 2-disc set and also a cracked and unplayable disc. In each case I received a prompt and courteous reply, the 'problem' disc was removed from my 'at home' list, and a further item from my 'wanted' list sent immediately. Some time later - a week or two, presumably when another copy of the problem disc was in stock- I received a 'good' copy in one of the normal mailings.

Lidl Movies certainly isn't perfect - I've had discs go missing, scratched and unplayable discs - but it has all been sorted out to my satisfaction without fuss or bother.

I have used this company for a long while, almost a year, and generally find them to be pretty good. I am an avid film watcher and will often watch the films on arrival and get them back into the post by the following morning.

I use the three disk package unlimited and have found that their turn around has been excellent except for the months of December which had lots of snow and holidays for non postage and now unfortunately January as they say I have not got disks at home but leave a few days before sending me a single disk, it has been a few weeks since I actually had three disks on the move, hopefully this is a glitch and normal service will resume, as I have generally found them very good with turn around. I will down grade my package to two disks unlimited if this carries on as that is all I am getting at the moment but fingers crossed, the service I enjoyed will resume.

I have only received one faulty disk (mamma mia) and have received over 100 titles from them.

I have never tried to cancel so do not know what that would be like with their customer service, 2 disk did go missing in the post from me to them, I reported them and it was sorted with no fuss and replacement disks were forwarded.

They are the cheapest company for DVDs i have found and I have no problem with recommending them.

The only thought against them is they seem a little shy on sending out blurays (unlike lovefilm which my friend has), either they do not have many copies or they have a policy on limiting them or maybe it is justs my random pick of the disks I have chosen.
