  • The job centre guys definetly need to go on some disabiltiy awareness /sensitivity/how to be a human being type training, does the job centre have an offical complaints procedure that you can follow?

Yes he gave me a leaflet when I asked his full name and who to complain to - he forgot the full name part ofcourse......and after I told him he was breaking the law he said 'well its not me that wrote the guidelines and people like you should write in to change it' but I got the feeling he was covering his back since there was no mention of where this particular policy was written, or who enforced it.

For the person who asked, sorry my quote didnt work - no he doesnt have a bus pass, he cant use public transport because makes him fall asleep uncontrolably and he cant wake himself up, he also has bad balance & vision so obviously can only use public transport with others around, we live on a farm aswell so have never used public transport whilst living here - I drive him around in my motability car.
Yes im disabled....yes I can do things you cant....but you can do things I cant so were equal! :D
  • Nice one ShaShaSha glad some one is taking a stand its people like you who are prepared to make a stand that makes life better for those suffering from disabilities

I thought you couldn't be registered disabled anymore? You used to be able to, but they did away with it - at least in my area.

they did in my area as well over 10 years ago, being on dla is now seen as the same as being registered disabled used to be
  • The qualifying criteria for the register is moderate learning disability, as this is qualifying threshold for learning disability services which most adults will come into contact with in adulthood...

Our social services do not keep a register of children with disability - not even moderate learning disability or severe physical disability. Each duty social worker has his own list!!! - there is NO combined list . (I have also worked with social services to try to reach disabled children for a social services funded holiday club - and they admitted that they do not keep a register at all.

I am disabled and the worst treatment I ever received as a disabled person was at a Job Centre.

I now work as a mystery shopper and actually work for a mystery shopping company that mystery shops the service received in Job Centres!!

I would love to get my revenge and do a mystery shop as a disabled person but, so far at least, the only disability mystery shops I have seen for Job Centres are pretending to be deaf!
  • There are no 'lists' I'm a social worker and although we know of people, children and adults, we work with they are not in any list. But this is just people we work with, not everyone with a disability / learning disability gets or wants assistance from the council in any way, more so with adults as children have some contact with the LA even if just through their school. Many adults have non and never come under the radar of the council.

The only formal lists kept of people by the LA are of blind/partially sighted IF the person chooses to register, again not all do. And under child protection legislaton.
  • If I'm honest this case comes as no suprise at all, the treatment of disabled people is bad enough to start with, Those with hidden disabilities are treated like dirt by most and if you are a young adult you have no chance.

This is why something needs to be done ultimately staff need to be trained/advised on how to treat disabled and those who still unable to do it perhaps disciplined.
