Why not got go the whole hog and get a 10p a minute 0871 number. You can get them free as well if you do a search.
Remember that these numbers are coming under ICSTIS regulation which may well mean that when this happens you have to register with ICSTIS and pay their fees. I'm not sure when this will happen but guess around same time as 0870 loses its revenue sharing.

I think this is a brilliant idea.

To those who think there is somehow a deception involved -there is! It is the concept of having a derived services number range intended for revenue-sharing but which is deliberately marketed not to appear so. As BT themselves say

"Customers may not perceive charges to your nationwide number as expensive"

In other words fingers crossed and you hope they won't notice they are paying 8p a minute!

My "home phone" is now a VOIP connection and I pay 0.59p/min for all my normal geographic calls, which means a call to an 0870 number is almost fourteen times more expensive than usual. Anything that gets revenge on a scam like that certainly has my vote.

See Useful Information & Say no to 0870! Hot Topics on Say no to 0870! for some links to discussion on getting your own 0870.

I also have an 0870 from UK2Numbers and a 070 Personal Number from FlexTel charged at 35p/min at all times from BT landlines! This is for calling my mobile and ensures that they don't benefit from any package they have for mobile numbers, in the same way that 0870 stops us benefitting from reduced 01/02 geographical rates.

FlexTel don't pay revenue on their 08 numbers, but they do allow free (for the receiver anyway) intelligent call routing. You can also have your 07 or 08 number come up on caller display, so you know it's a business call.

So why post in a forum for mobile phones? Use Google.

Why not wait until the new 03 range becomes available and get one of those instead? If you do, you won't be accused of ripping off callers by making them pay more than for an ordinary geographical call.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Just looked at Call Checker. Following BT's recently acquired permission to lower prices, they are charging 0 pence per minute for 0845 and 0870 numbers. Does this herald the end of these numbers, do we think?

If that's what you're seeing (I'm not), it's an error on the Callchecker. Don't believe it.

I've had a few 0870 numbers for at least 3 years now, I give them to the greedy sods who expect me to call on their rip-off numbers.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
