All the provider wanted was a name and address, the land line number it was to be diverted to and a ‘business name’. We made up a business name and it was up and running within 15 minutes.

So your deceiving the provider to obtain the 0870 service.

Oh dear! No one was deceived or hoodwinked. In the UK, under current legislation, you can run a business of any description as a sole proprietor under any name you chose, providing it does not infringe the copyright or give the impression it is related to another business. If the turnover of a business is under certain monetary figures, it does not need to register for VAT or submit company accounts. It does not need to be trading at the time, it can be considered ‘dormant’. The ‘company’ name I gave was my surname followed by the word ‘Services’.

In answer to flossy_splodge, I searched Google using “free 0870” and came up with a number of providers. Some of the site ads said “free”, but that only related to annual fees, not the set up, which was around £9.95. I just chose a provider that was offering a completely free set up and no annual fee if I used one of their numbers from a list. This was shown in their ‘offers’ section. The only fee I will pay will be when or if I want to change the original landline number the 0870 is diverted to; that will be £9.95.

My landline remains the same and friends and family use it to call us. As tomstickland says, the 0870 number just diverts to your landline.
    Good luck!

I just chose one from a list of free numbers. You could pay for a 'special number' if you wanted to.
I say 'good stuff'. I had heard of this before, but have been too lazy to do anything about it. If we all did this then companies would soon start using geo or freephone numbers. Can I ask if you are actually earning anything and how much from this number ? Also can you give the name of the company you obtained it from ? If you don't want to publish, a PM would be great.

Remember though that you only have about 1.5 years of use before you'll probably have to get rid of it when the revenue sharing stops.

I remember giving my 0870 to Ofcom when I made a complaint once. They weren't to impressed and asked if they could have a geo. I, of course, very politely reminded him I'm just doing what most other companies are doing including gov depts and yourselves (at that time Ofcom only issued an 0845 but changed to a geo not long after).

So far I have earned £12.65! Not a lot, but I never intended it to be a money generator. I just wanted to have a bit of fun with big businesses! I think you can receive more per call if you pay for the number; the exact amounts are based on how much you pay. As my number was free, the provider keeps a higher percentage of the call costs.

I would not recommend any particular provider. I happen to use UK2Numbers at http://www.uk2numbers.co.uk/ and I only chose them because of their ‘offer’ at the time, which they are not doing at the moment.
