How do we transfer a mobile number to a new provider

We washed DH's mobile phone in the washing machine last night (accidentally!). The sim card is still good but the rest of the phone is dead.

He is currently with T-Mobile on a £15 a month contract but he never uses £15 worth of calls. We want to change to a Tesco pay as you go but keep his original phone number. We have no idea how to do this - can anyone help please?

Thank you.

How long was the contract he signed up for?

Assuming he's been on for the minimum period (i.e. it was a 12 month contract and he's had that tariff for longer); it would be just a case of ringing up T-mobile customer services and asking them for your 'PAC' number. You would then need to ring up Tesco Mobile Customer Services (once you've brought the sim) and give them that number and they'll be able to port your old number to your new pay as you go sim. It may take a couple of weeks to occur.

Also, T-mobile may offer you a better deal when you tell them you want to leave, so you may want to consider that? Hope that helped.

Oh, and just in case in was a 12 month contract he signed up to and that stated period has not been completed; if you leave before the contract was due to finish, T-mobile may charge you for the remanding period.

Here's a bit more info for you:
    http://www.tescomobile.com/help/guideGettingStarted6.aspx

Also, you'll have to make sure that your phone is 'unlocked' so that other sims from other networks are compatible with your phone. Probably easiest wya to check is to put a friends sim (from a different netwrok) in the phone and see if you can make calls :).

Thanks Stealth. I don't think there is a minimum any more. He was on a more expensive tariff and (after reading Martin's weekly e-mails) I persuaded him to switch to a pay as you go with them. When he rang T Mobile they said they didn't do a p-a-y-g and persuaded him to go to this £15 a month tariff. With the old tariff he could upgrade his phone yearly but he didn't do this so they said that he wasn't tied in any more.

T Mobile do offer a PAYG service, and they now have a very competitive 12p a minute anytime any network rate.

    See: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?pf=Pay+as+you+go&nmid=pas_pp_plan_payg_details&ppid=26&nmid2=ctl_pas_pp_details&menuid=ctl_pas_pp_change_plan&chosenPricePlan=payg

He might be better staying with them.

Mobilegossip - thanks for this. The calls on Tesco are 10p to three of your favourite numbers - he doesn't make many calls so the three numbers should suit him.
