No, according to the Foods Standards Agency:

Some foods don't have to carry a "best before" or "use by" date. These are

• fresh fruit and vegetables which have not been peeled or cut into pieces;
• wines and similar drinks obtained from grapes;
• drinks with an alcoholic strength by volume of 10% or more;
• soft drinks, fruit juices, fruit nectars and alcoholic drinks sold in containers larger than 5 litres which are sold to catering establishments;
• flour confectionery and bread normally consumed within 24 hours of preparation;
• vinegar;salt;
• solid sugar and products consisting almost solely of flavoured or coloured sugar;
• chewing gums and similar products;
• edible ices in individual portions.

Yesterday a local Aldi had the 6 green apples (as in previous week's offering). Some bags were marked with the 69p label and others not. The sign above was that green apples were 99p.

So I selected a bag marked at 69p (so older stock) and took with other items to the check-out. Went through at 99p. Unfortunately I did not notice until I had paid for all the shopping. I then told the cashier that I didn't want them at 99p. She expressed some surprise and asked if I wanted red apples instead but that she could not sell them at the 69p which was marked . Rather than realising that they were old stock she said someone must have put the sticker on by mistake.

As I had paid, we had to go through the process of her borrowing a pen from a colleague in order that I could complete a refund form (name, address, postcode, reason for refund, receipt number, my signature, her signature), call a manager to key in magic numbers and hold up the queue.

Given that they can put through reduced price items by not scanning, I really don't see why the rule was that she couldn't sell old stock at the former price.

Good selection for this nice hot weather. Avocado & Prawn starter, followed by jersey royal potato salad with garlic dressing.
