Brighton, 9th Nov 09, Ten-Hour Fundraising Karaoke! Refugee Action & Lucky Voice.

Refugee Action, in association with Lucky Voice, present a ten-hour marathon of karaoke!

Fancy doing a marathon without having to do any training?

Fancy raising lots of money for people fleeing war and persecution? :A

Fancy yourself as a blatantly over-looked rival to Mariah/Elton?

Can you...Charioke? :j

If you have been answering 'yes, Yes, YES!' then we have some great news for you! Refugee Action has got together with the celebrities' favourite karaoke bar, Lucky Voice, in Brighton, to host a ten hour long karaoke marathon on 9th Nov 1pm-11pm, with all the sponsorship money going to charity. A 'Charioke', if you will. No training is necessary but do feel free to start belting out Tina Turner if you feel the need to practice. And encourage your friends to join in.

We are looking for groups or individuals who would like to join a team. We will provide lots of support and advice on what to do next to fundraise, as well as goody bags and endless amounts of gratitude. The fundraising target is £300 per person which is a lot less than the average marathon runner aims to raise, so should be easy-peesy. You will need to be at Lucky Voice for the full ten hours, which is the tricky bit. But you will be given food and soft drinks and (if they can get you away from the microphone) will be sharing the singing time with the rest of your team.

Even if you can't take part, we'd love you to sponsor our brave fundraisers who have already signed up to the challenge. They can all be found on at Justgiving.com by searching for Refugee Action.

If you'd like to find out more, please email me at sallyc 'at' refugee-action.org.uk I promise I won't sing to you.
I'm sorry for not being able to put the direct links in this post, and for my email address, but as a new user I am not allowed to by the site administrator due to the risk of spamming.

Best wishes

Refugee Action

Who are we?
Around the world, armed conflicts and brutal persecution claim innocent lives and cause misery to men, women and children every day. A few manage to flee to a safe country, like the UK, where they can receive protection and be given a chance to start over.

Refugee Action works nationally with refugees and asylum seekers to help them rebuild their lives in the UK. We provide essential advice and practical support to help some of the most vulnerable people in our society to become part of their new communities. Last year we gave vital advice to over 10,000 refugees and asylum seekers. As a grass roots agency, we are committed to ensuring refugees have a voice and we campaign for their rights and lobby for change. Through our awareness raising work, we challenge the misconceptions around asylum and strive for racial tolerance in our diverse society.

Why is your support vital?
Refugees and asylum seekers get a bad press, to say the least. Much of the media would have you believe that refugees are queuing up to enter Britain and leech off our benefits system. As a result, people seeking sanctuary are often subject to a daily routine of racial harassment and even violent attacks. The truth is that the UK hosts just 3% of the world’s refugees. Those that are here didn’t come seeking handouts, they came fleeing for their lives. If you were forced to leave your family and friends and travel to another country in just the clothes you are standing in, wouldn’t you need some support?

  • The London event was a massive success, with over £7,000 raised so far for Refugee Action and over 70 people taking part for nine charities. See all the fun on Facebook, search for Charioke Marathon.

I didn't read or hear anything about the London event or I would've taken part! :(
