Hi,

Ive just started an OU course, which is very much internet based, so I'd like to change my very basic phone for one that I can browse the internet with, read pdfs, listen to sound clips and watch video links that are on the OU website.

I dont want to go down the iPod/Blackberry route, because Im not a gadget freak, and Im not fussed about a camera/video recorder or MP3 player either. I have looked at the Nokia E71 - which seems ok, but I dont know if it does all that I want it to do! And the cheaper the better!!!

Also, who is the cheapest network provider for internet browsing - Im currently on orange who do 500mb for £5 per month (which I believe equates to 50 hours of browsing!)

Thanks for your help,
Confused of Manchester

I have a fairly good phone (Samsung U100), but to be honest, web browsing on it can be unreliable even if I have a decent signal. In fact every "non gadgety" phone I've used has pretty poor web access. Most phones have web browsers that don't have Flash (so you won't see videos on YouTube, etc.) and have limited support for anything other than HTML or WML files.

I really don't know much about this (hopefully someone else can fill in the details), but I reckon a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile phone might be your best bet. Even better would be a small netbook or the PocketSurfer - would they be too big?

Oh, and Virgin offer up to 25MB/day for a 30p/day charge, which seems okay for casual browsing.

Would not want to be using a mobile to read pdf myself.
PDF files if you are downloading could be any size so that 500mb is not really enough (thats only my opinion).

Get a netbook with a usb internet dongle (with one large data package, 15gig a month or something - even that is not enough if you start doing what you would do on a normal pc) if you want to do that (as esuhl suggested).
  • Is that Pocketsurfer really as good as it looks?????

I find the Nokia 5800 good for internet browsing, i also hear good things about google android phones, like the G1/G2, HTC Hero/Magic etc.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies
