Oh and re. the tail docking - this is a concern as she DID have her tail docked but not legally/properly. The breeder did it himself as far as i know and it's obvious as it's too long! When we took her for her injections it was the first thing the vet noticed.

Having said that, no problems with it til now.

The vet should talk to you on the phone, but are unlikely to really offer any worthwhile advice without seeing her.

I know how you feel, I try not to run to the vet every time, because it's £40 per consultation. I do not grudge the money or drugs if treatment is necessary but I do sometimes think vets take advantage of owners dispensing anti biotics when they may not be needed.

I have a 48 hour wait and see rule unless he's off his food or not moving from his bed. My main litmus test is going to the back door and seeing if he follows. The day (or night) that he doesn't seem keen to go out will be when I consult the vet.

Its a tricky one sometimes though isnt it? I know what you mean about 'wait and see' and sometimes, if you are pretty sure its nothing drastic, its a good idea - however, in other cases it could at best be a false economy, in others could be really dangerous...

A friend of mine's dog was sick and off colour a while ago - she died within 24 hours from first showing symptoms from either bloat or a blockage..

My dog ate the contents of a broken jam jar - I really didnt think she had eaten any glass, but took her to the vets for an x ray (I thought I was being a bit paranoid!)- she had a big shard of glass in her belly, which would have cut up her intestines had it reached them...

Again, if this dog is has done something other than damage her tail, (as the OP is not really sure that is what it is) it would be a good idea to see the vet asap... its sometimes so hard to know at the time though! As you said, the vet will advise over the phone, but most times will need to see the dog to be sure.

I know it probably doesn't relate to the current problem, but when springers are docked for health reasons rather than aesthetic only the top 1/4 or 1/3 of the tail is removed. The tail is still left quite long and doesn't look docked to the uneducated eye.

This is what my two look like, which is the standard springer dock. If your girl looks like this then that is normal.

How is that helpful? You don't know that the OPs circumstances have not changed since they got the dog. We are in the middle of a recession, people fall ill, people get made redundant.

I can't believe I read this!!! What the OP can and cannot afford is sod all to do with you! OP was simply asking for advice on her pet not on her financial status!

My ex boyfriend got the dog.

By then i was pregnant and then made redundant and the boyfriend changed his mind about us and run off with other women, leaving me with the dog, my son and pregnant.

Since this time i have not managed to get a job temp or otherwise and i am due to give birth in 6 weeks, i'm struggling along while the ex enjoys his 3 figure weekly disposable income and there's absolutely nothing i can do about it.

I have donated to the PDSA each time we have been there and would do so again, as i am grateful they are there for people in my circumstances.

But thanks for your trollish, unnecessary comment.
