Service or not?

  • I also am beginning to wonder why have a service when an MOT covers most mechanical parts and safety features, now I have kids and little time for cars now...hence why I have a Jap car now !!!
I would change the oil if you do short journeys as my wifes Ford use to never reach operating temp as she drove a mile to work (no she couldn't walk as it was in a dodgy area) and the oil filler cap would be gunged up with mayonnaise and eat exhaust rear silencers every 12 months through corrosion as full of condensation.
Basically I would do a fluids service, ie change oil, check and top up levels etc, lubricate lock and hinges, check tyres for bulges, cuts, nails etc.
I always say that you can hear, feel or smell issues with cars. Also check your owners handbook as it often says what is done at each service, so you can replicate this. If I was buying a car, it would not phase me seeing a few receipts for service parts and a blank service book...rather that than no receipts and a service book stamped with one the seller made up rom Staples !

it is not imaginary, and i started a new thread about it, rather than coming into some one else's thread and filling it up with pathetic innuendo and cringe worthy pictures. Get msn messenger if you want to have an internet relationship

I don't think people buying an 8 / 9 year old car set too much store by stamped dealer service histories.

I was meaning any sort of history as the op isn't asking whether to take it to a dealer or independant, but whether to do it at all. On an older car i'd expect to see services done by indys in most cases.

Even buying a beater i'd buy a £600 car that had an appropriate service history over a £500 car that last had anything done 20k miles ago and there are plenty examples of both to choose from. (no thanks to scrappage, but they still exist)

I would agree with you on that point. When I bought my KA it had a full service history, I would be put off buying a car if it hadn't been reguarly serviced.

Following on from my previous question (didn't want to start a new thread!)

My Car has been MOT'd today and passed - woo hoo!!

The garage also changed my oil and topped up my coolant etc at no extra cost so I'm happy!

My next question is on my MOT paperwork, I have received some advisory notices and I have no clue want they mean and what I need to do about them.
    • Offside and near side MaCpherson strut has slight movement?
    • Nearside and offside suspension arm rubber brush deteriorated?
    • Nearside and offside front brake hose slightly deteriorated?
How serious are these problems and how soon should I be getting them fixed?

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks very much

at the most i would have the brake hoses replaced and get the brake fluid changed. i would leave the rest until next year and it might just pass again.
