Any ISP that doesnt need a BT line?

I know that if you go with NTL you dont need a BT line but they dont cover my area.
The reason i dont wanna get a BT line is ive recently moved into a brand new property which doesnt have a live line and i think its gonna cost me £99 to get it connected with BT.

Any suggestions or have i gota just bite the bullet? Thanks

The OP will still need a BT line I think so that the companies (named above), will be able to transfer the BT number from BT to them, so that the OP can use whichever company they choose.

So to the OP there is no other choice I think, unless you wanna have satellite broadband (really expensive option, imo). Make sure you hurry for the £99 connection cos BT are gonna increase it soon (there was a recent post of this increase of a new BT connection on here).

Blueyonder, it's cable so no need for a phone line at all. I pay £25 for 4meg, been with them for about 5 years now, highly recommend.

Sorry, didn't see the bit about NTL not covering your area. Need an eye test me thinks.

Bulldog, an full LLU ISP, often offer new line installations at £1 - they have this offer on now, said to end 31/05/06 - its still BT actually doing the installation on Bulldog's behalf. I was with them last year, very breifly, as I found the service a bit rubbish (slow service at times, useless DNS servers, and poor poor customer service). I have heard things have improved, although billing is still up the creek (I didn't get billed at at all, I know someone who hasn't been billed sice they started service 2 years ago!!!). There are a couple of people I know who are happy with the service.

At the moment, you also get free wireless modem.

Personally, I wouldn't ordinarilly recommend people to Bulldog, but obviously you're after skipping the BT installation charge - but things seems to have improved though. Once you're out of the Bulldog mimimum contract (used to be 1 month, but I believe its 12 months now), you can call BT to initiate the "Return to Donor" process which is where BT can take ownership of the line (no charge).

Compare Bulldog with other LLU based ISP's here. You'll see Bulldog's CS rating has improved since last year.

I'm having a nightmare with Bulldog right now - but it did work as a cheap way of getting the line fitted. I'm due to cancel with Bulldog in 2 days, I phoned BT and they said that they could connect me to BT (but with a change of phone number) within 2 hours of me getting disconnected from Bulldog - bit of a pain as you'll have 2 phone numbers in a very short space of time.

Bulldog haven't managed to get a single bill correct for me (I've now cancelled my direct debit with them and am waiting for a response to my "signed for" written complaint.)

I'm due to end my contract on 29/05/06 - but I'm not holding my breath.

However I would recommend using them to get you off the £100 charge. It'll cost you about £1 for connection, a month of services (though you need to give a month notice to cancel so don't think you can just cancel at the drop of a hat) probably about £20-£30 plus phonecalls.

Last time I checked (and I definately got it) £35 cashback with quidco.

Total cost to you should be less than nothing, apart from some hassles.

The other advantage of doing it this way is BT only inforce a 3 month minimum contract rather than the standard 12 month minimum contract when you do make the switch.

    Hope this helps

Oh dear - still poor billing then. I believe the contract period is now a minimum 12 months for new customers (not the 1 month it used to be).
