BT Automatically Renewing Contract - help

I moved into my new house 14 months ago and signed up for a BT contract for 12 months back then.

I rang up last week to move to another company (sorting out finances) and was told that I wouldn't be able to as I had just renewed my contract. I had not.

BT apparantly sent me a letter telling me that if I did not call them to not renew my contract that it would be renewed.

I have now spoken to a customer services operative who very smarmily told me that it is not their fault that I did not read the letter and to take it up with Royal Mail.

I am adamant that I have not received the letter, but they claim that they sent it therefore it is my fault. They did not send it with proof of postage or recorded delivery.

I am at my tether now because I am tied in for another ten months. I am waiting to hear from a manager but I doubt I will get any further.

So be careful if you are thinking of signing up to BT they treat you like mugs.

  • I have been doing a bit of digging and it seems that I am not the only one who hasn't received their automatically renewing request letter:

It's the old organ-donor issue again. Expecting people to write/reply if they don't want to do something (which, of course, only encourages people to deny receiving the letter even if they did receive it) is, IMHO, unreasonable.

It would be interesting to test that in the Small Claims Court.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Well it has been eight days since I initially called and I have now been promised two call backs - have had none so far.

I was told that this would happen within 48 hours, and then today was told that they would never say that and it is usually five working days - either way they still haven't managed to contact me within the time frames they stated.

Yet I am supposed to remember when my contract is up for renewal a year after I initially signed up and if I don't I have to put up with their appaling service as a result?

Where is that BT representative who lurks on these boards maybe he can help get someone to bother to reply to their customers?

    Its good to talk :money:

    Uggh!

Just face up to it, you are too low in the food chain to fix this. It needs someone with both seniority and integrity to admit that autorenewing contracts are a dishonest way of conducting business and just put a stop to it.
