Have to cancel holiday - advice/help needed please!

Hi everyone, this is my first post so hope it is okay!

Me and my other half booked a holiday with Thomson over the phone 2 weeks ago. We've not been on holiday for nearly 4 years so I was looking forward to it. Unfortunately, my OH and I had a major domestic yesterday (don't ask - my OH is a very volatile person). Anyway, he won't go and is demanding I pay him back the money. As it is so close to departure Thomson would only give 10% back. I looked at travel insurance (RBS Royalties Gold worldwide travel insurance) but can't see anything there that would cover this scenario.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a website where I could advertise it for sale - I checked out ebay but doesn't seem to be much happening on there.
Alternatively - if anyone fancies 2 weeks in Gran Canaria, 4* all inclusive leaving from Glasgow on 16th November then let me know.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated, as I can't really afford to give him this money.

    I am a Travel Agent

My company’s ABTA numbers are P6046. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.
  • Says you've made 6 posts ?
Anyway I'm sure you could sell the holiday if you could get a buyer. I'm actually surprised you are being offered 10% back, I have always lost the lot when cancelling. You can also transfer the holiday to another date.

  • When I think back I maybe did do a few posts when I first joined - sorry, didn't mean to mislead. Been so long ago I had forgotten about it.

The travel date is 16th November, and would get 10% back up to 3rd November, thereafter I would get nothing back.

Is there a specific website where people can advertise their holidays?
  • Why not tell your OH that since its him throwing his toys out of the pram he owes you the cash for the holiday which is now ruined?

You haven't explained who actually paid for the holiday. If he paid then I'd just go on my own - if he doesn't want to go that's his problem.

Why are you the one trying to make all the arrangements as he's the one who's changed his mind?
  • I paid the deposit of £105 (on credit card to get section 75 protection) and his maestro card paid for the balance of £1450 (to avoid the CC charge). He is in a major huff and saying that he never wanted to go (but that's just the kind of things that he does now and then). This morning he took my car to his work, left his van with no keys so that I couldn't get to work! I know you are all thinking - why are you still with him - and believe me the car episode is the one that has broken the camels back!
  • P.S. - I won't go on my own - I don't trust him not to have all my belongings thrown out onto the front lawn before I get back!

    He sounds lovely.

I'd tell him to whistle for his money.

Shame Gran Canaria is lovely this time of year
  • Sorry all - I'm just letting off steam now!

I think what I will do is pay him my half share then he can't complain about it. Does anyone agree with that?

We went to Asda yesterday and he was complaining about that as well - he's not getting half though, I counted up what my stuff was and it was only £43 out of £140 spend!!!!

You wouldn't think we had been together nearly 21 years - thank god I never married the s**t (am I allowed to say that? REALLY sorry if I'm not!)
