For the small difference in interest I would prefer the Birmingham Midshires 2yr bond @ 4.25% ..Withdrawals allowed at 90 days loss of interest on the amount withdrawn.

I've had some stuff off BM today as we've got a one year fix that ends in November. The rate they're quoting on the paperwork for the two year fixed is 4.45 gross. Is the difference because we're already with BM I wonder? It does say rates correct at 28 Sept 2009.....

Is this worth going for or shall I wait a little?

    Crystal ball territory....
1 year @ 3.95 % is the market leading rate at the moment - if the banks respond with a higher rate, it probably won't be much higher, and depending on the sums involved the difference after Tax probably wouldn't be much anyway, (test out some figures) and whilst your waiting your losing out on the best rate available. The other advantage of this is that, if you are fortunate to have more than £50k to invest your funds are 100% guaranteed. On that basis seems a good bet IMO

The 2 year 4.25% rate can be beaten by HBOS & friends (4.35%)- but if you want to look for somewhere outside HBOS, this is also pretty good - and you have the 90 day loss of interest withdrawal option, if rate suddenly leap up next year. Beyond 2 years there are better rates available, but not all give you a withdrawal option.

    So upto you...............

We will bank your cheque, or start to process your debit card payment, as soon as we receive it, so please make sure you have enough money in your account at the time.

And they really mean this. I bought a growth bond in January by telephone. I quoted my debit card number and the next day I saw that the money had been taken from my HSBC current account.

Yes, they often give a slightly better rate for renewals - I have the same quoted (4.45% for 2 years) for renewing a 1 year fix which was around 0.3% better than 'new money' last November.

The 3.95% one year bond is in the weekly email so don't expect it to be around for too long. Don't delay if you want to go for it.
    I came, I saw, I melted
  • I have 50k to invest in one of these but have not got access to the funds just yet. Anybody know off hand if i set one up with £500 initially and then add in later?
