Hi
Please can anyone advise me whether you have to pay to receive texts in the USA.
We have an O2 payg sim for our son who is going there for 12 days. I know there is a charge to send them but are they free to receive?
We will stay in contact using Skype most of the time but the payg is just for the airport etc.
Thank you.

I believe there will be a charge to recieve them. Receiving texts for free only counts within the EU.

    Taken from O2's website:

It's always free to receive a text when you are overseas.

Well ding dong, that's quite nice of O2.

Don't think they could charge you for something you have no choice of receiving? At least with a phone call you can reject it.

The ethics are questionable, but O2 have to pay the American network for delivering the text to your phone. Seems that O2 are simply swallowing that cost, and probably more than making up for it from the text and call charges when you initiate a text or call.

You can't. You can receive for free abroad. Sending from abroad will be charged at roaming rates.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks macman I worded that badly. I meant to say good that we can text him from the UK without it costing him. I know he will have to pay to text back but hopefully we will be able to use skype most of the time.

just to clarify jhe's post, 1 roaming sms = 4 messaging units are only for contract customers and for payg customers (1 roaming sms = 3 messaging units) on the text anytime tariffs that were activated before April 18th 2008
