New Combi Boiler in loft - still wont work

Hi, I moved into a 2nd floor flat (top floor of a victorian house) over a yr ago and we had the boiler moved from the bedroom to upstairs in the loft - literally went straight up about 6ft.

The boiler has never worked well - the red fault light always comes on - heating only last sporadically and the hot water is unreliable. Constantly having to go into the loft to push the red button.

So after 5 boiler men coming round - we just gave in and got a new boiler fitted - literally 10mins after the boiler man left the new boilers red light came on! Please help as we have fitted a £900 new boiler for what seems like no reason and we cant get to the root of the problem. Shall we move the boiler back into the bedroom.

The boiler sits in a big loft - is vented through the roof. New model ProCombi 85 HE.

  • Air in the system is collecting in the highest spoy ie top of boiler causing it to lock out. Get whoever fitted it to come back and put bleed points as required. The bad news is that this is probably what was wrong with the old one.

I'm no plumber but how does it get enough pressure up there in the loft? ISn't the water tank almost level with it ...and don't they usually need about 1 bar to work?

Sad story about the fitters...I had a problem once and Googled it and found it could be a 50p wire on a plumbing forum, a common fault with these nasty Ravenheat things apparently. Told the gas guy about this...nah he said...main board and some other part costing a total 300 quid later as he advised it was still not working...fit the wire I said...he did...it worked. My mum was about to pay him..i didn't. He should have known that, he went on a rampage assuming it was all being paid experimenting then had to put it all back and charge for the time replacing that took. 450 quid down to 60 which was still a lot for 5 minutes work.

Sad that you too have probably had a better solution in a few lines on an internet forum than a professional gas fitter who was actually there isn't it? Cowboys

  • Make sure the auto air vent is opened on the boiler. I would get the fitter back anyway to look at it, its under warranty with the manufactures anyway.
£900 to install a boiler? was the guy registered as thats way to cheap?
    Was the system powerflushed?
Was the benchmark book filled in?
Has the boiler been registered with building control?

They are responsible for the boiler for next six years this is legal point under the GOODS AND SERVICES ACT 1982 - This was pointed out to me by the Trading standards in Hampshire - when I had a problem , You do have the right to bring someone else to fix it , then recover it through the county court - Check that the firm is registered at COMPANIES HOUSE on their website- But get the bull horn out and very very loud noises to be made- Keep your money in your pocket before taking the legal route - The local papers love stories like this - best of luck
