Credit File: credit card company query

Good point.
It could also be an error in the system somewhere, some poor programmer will be having kittens if it is.0 -
if it is on equifax site it is on there and not just via email, i would get another report (you get 2 free per year anyway, and can buy more if needed) as if you look at the dates it may jog your memory if its something you have took out (ie have you opened any catalogues, current accounts, loans, credit cards etc around then?)
The information is actually on the website and the alert is only 3 days old - may have to ask Equifax if nobody recognises it..

I signed up over a year ago but from memory Equifax search your record to confirm you are who you say you are when you register - but its the type of search others don't see..

I get free Equifax credit file alerts due to my Capital One credit card and have recently been sent an alert stating that:
Has anyone ever heard of this company or know what brand credit card it could be referring too?
I can't recall applying for any credit cards recently - and with all the other credit file entries, its relatively obvious which company brand/parent they are talking about..
Thanks
Sunil
The last 8 digits of the credit card comes to mind, but to find the answer simply ring or email the CRA and ask them to identify the account for you! :rolleyes:2010 - year of the troll

just a thought, is that what the email alert states?? because usually they dont state what it is just that there is a change in the credit file. you then have to log into equifax for the alert information and press the + but and gives more info there, if its in email i would log into equifax if i was you as sounds a bit like it could be a fishing email.
Yes I am aware of all of this, thanks anyway.
All the Equifax alert emails I have got thus far do not give any details at all, other than that there is a new alert for a change to my credit file.if it is on equifax site it is on there and not just via email, i would get another report (you get 2 free per year anyway, and can buy more if needed) as if you look at the dates it may jog your memory if its something you have took out (ie have you opened any catalogues, current accounts, loans, credit cards etc around then?)
Well, I followed your advice, have taken out my remaining free credit report (only 1 month into the year) and have found out more about mysterious company "71291559" - Further details indicate it is the Bank of Ireland.
I then checked my Post Office Credit card against the last 4 digits of the credit account number provided in the entry, and these coincided - bingo!
So company "71291559" is the Post Office Credit card provided by the Bank of Ireland.
The Post Office Credit card is mentioned on moneysavingexpert.com, as a card with no foreign exchange, when using it for purchases abroad.
What is strange is that I have had this PO credit card for two years, and have
not used it in the last year or more, and yet it figures in my latest credit report (today), showing no activity (all balances at £0), and yet labelled as an update dated beginning of this month...? Perhaps this corresponds to a quarterly statement?
And as a consequence of this and it being labelled extremely unhelpfully as "71291559" I have wasted my last free credit report.... ...don't know if it is Equifax or Bank of Ireland to blame for this - probably both!
In hindsight checking all the credit card numbers againts the credit account number for this entry would have been enough to figure this out, as the credit account number last four digits were given in the original mysterious alert, but I have not posted them for obvious reasons, but should have posted the fact they were actually given!
Anyhow, I have posted all the details here so that others don't have to unnecesarily purchase extra credit reports or waste their free credit report quota. :A
Thank you Anna for your advice, without it, it would have taken me longer to sort this out.
Best wishes,
