    Hi Andy,

I can recommend IKEA king size beds. Ours is about 15 years old now, and still going strong. We've got 2 single mattresses on it - mine is firm, and OH's is medium. That way when either tosses and turns it doesn't disturb the other so much - just wish it would muffle OH's snores as well!

We got a mattress topper so that the crack in the middle was covered, makes it more comfy too. But after an unfortunate accident a few years ago (too long a story for here) we had to get rid of it, now we just use an an old duvet under the bottom sheet.

I think the bed has done us very well, as I commonly spend up to 15 hours a day in bed, so it's had a lot more wear than most folks beds get.

I don't know if they do them with drawers in a divan base, ours has those open draws on wheels from IKEA, though I have to say I'm not so happy with those as everything gets incredibly dusty and I haven't got around to doing something about it. After 15 years!

    Hi,

We are after a new divan bed. Haven't had a chance to try out any yet but want to try and get a list of decent brands to consider. I've posted about this recently on someone else's thread but the budget has gone up a bit since then!

    Criteria is:
    1) must be kingsize (possibly superkingsize though our budget probably won't stretch to it)

There are loads of high quality, pocket sprung, superking size, 4 drawer divan sets available for well under £1000.

    3) currently our preference is for a pocket sprung mattress with a decent spring count and adequeate amount of side stitching - happy to turn it regularly. Divan base i'd favour a platform top this time.

First of all the spring count. More than 800 pocket springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If there are too many springs then each individual spring has to be so small and weak, that the get damaged easily. So I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 in a king size mattress (the industry standard is for the spring count to be for a king size mattress. So a 1000 pocket sprung superking size mattress would actually contain 1200 springs).

All good quality pocket sprung mattresses will have side stitching. Don't be fooled when you can see the rows of side stitching on the side of the mattress. This is just for cosmetic reasons, and it is actually hidden on most mattresses.

A two sided turnable mattress is a must, otherwise it won't last anywhere near as long.

    4) Comfort level looking for is firm which should suit differing weights of wife and i from what i've read - though I realise we need to get out and try a few beds out to verify this - many of the beds seem to come with an option of comfort levels anyway so at moment not a big issue.

Most pocket sprung beds don't come much firmer than medium to firm. This is because pocket springs that were too firm wouldn't contour to your body, you would just be perched on top.

Whatever you do, don't go for the gimmicks where one side is firmer than the other. This would have the same effect as making the mattress non turn.

    5) The existing double bed is a silentnight miracoil one with sprung-edge base that is about 5 years old, creaky, hole in divan and mattress, edges seem to have collapsed and can feel springs in the back..so anything that is made by the silentnight group of companies (sealy, layezee, rest assured or pocket spring bed company) is a big NO!

It would be a good idea to stay away from any of the big brands.

    6) Total budget for bed and new bedding is around £1000 (existing bed is double so we need new duvet and bed linen, mattress protector, as well as some new pillows). Obviously being a MSEr i'd rather not spend all that and will be looking for the best deals...but i want to spend enough to ensure we get something that lasts a bit longer than the silentnight bed did! Also need a headboard but will sort that out later on so will leave out of the £1000 budget for now.

You should have no problem getting the whole lot for under £1000

I came across Sleeping Solutions when we were previously buying a futon and found them very helpful (though regrettably i ordered from co-op bed shop instead - wouldn't buy from them again after the probs we had!). With quidco i can get 20% cashback so they look quite appealing to my MSEr eyes! Looking at their selection this one seems to fit the bill nicely ..i've read millbrook is one of the better named big brands. We have a beds direct near us (as well as the usual suspects of Dreams, Bensons, Sleepmasters etc) where we could try out some millbrook beds though they don't appear to stock the same range..but i guess it would at least give an idea as to quality to expect.

The one in the link is way over priced, even if you take into account 20% cash back from Quidco.

Anyway any recommendations for brands of beds and good deals on at the moment would be appreciated..will consider decent big brands but from what i've read the quality of lesser known brands based around west-yorkshire may be better.

    Thanks

    Andy

As you know, I'm not allowed to actually recommend anything.

we're very happy with our Millbrook Jupiter mattress that we bought from sleeping solutions via quidco. it's on our existing sealy divan base (no drawers) with no problems.

the average price i could find elsewhere online was around £749, same as sleeping solutions. the 20% cashback validated very quickly & is set for payment next month.

masses of info on these forums that it sounds like you've already had a look at, good luck! :)

Looking at your post, it was like reading my mind for exactly what I am looking for. A good quality, 4 drawed, pocket sprung divan for about £1000 ( or hopefully less). Is it possible to let me know your conclusions on prefered brands.

    many thanks
  • thats great, , i'll look into those.
    Many thanks

We have a millbrook bed, cost a small foutune but worth every penny! We have a soft matteress, this was recomended to us. I cannot sleep in any other bed now. I even dread holidays as I miss my bed so much. A few years ago a sustained a back injury and although I have problems sleeping my bed is aways comfortable.
  • I brought my bed off ebay.

Seller was Bedlum.beds, i read about him on this forum. It was the Madrid 11" MEMORY FOAM & 1000 POCKET KING SIZE MATTRESS.

I LOVE IT!! Was alot cheaper than anything i could find anywhere else.

Also great as it can be turned, alot of memory foam mattress only have foam on 1 side so can only be turned 1 way.

Delivery was good as well, they have there own delivery team.

So basically i'm going round in circles and should just have bought the first bed i saw and linked to in the first place...it's often the case! Millbrook does seem to be becoming a forum favourite recently ..despite Tim's comments :)

I've never said that Millbrook are no good. They are deffinately one of the better big brands. All I have said is that you can get better for less with smaller independent manufacturers.

Is this bed really comfy to sleep in I like somthing that is medium to firm support. I currently have a rest assured pocket sprung mattress which is okay but not brilliant.

    Thanks
  • hi everyone

I've been scouring the boards looking for advice, as I'm after buying a superking-size divan & mattress (memory foam).

Lots of great tips on here... I've read a couple of times that bartering in a 'showroom' is a must, especially if you're a cash buyer (which I will be).

So I was just wondering if anyeone had any experience of bartering, and what you managed to get for your money? i'm generally a bit shy about bartering (!) but happy to give it a go!

So for example, did you haggle down the price, or go for extras to be thrown in (linen, pillows. etc?)

    thank you! :)
