Selling a car

I've got one or two questions about selling a car, sorry if they sound dumb, i've never done this before.

I have an 11 yr old car to sell, the dealer offered me peanuts as a PX (then persuaded me to sell it myself), so I thought I'd give it a try.

1. Where is the best place to advertise it? Autotrader, Ebay or both?

2. What is the safest type of payment to accept? apart from a wad of notes?

3. The road tax is up at the end of November, is it worth renewing it if I get to the end of Nov and nobody has bitten? or in other words, should I just march down to a dealer and take his puny offering? The reason I ask this, is that I suspect the run up to Xmas is a bad time of the year to sell a car...so I will have a taxed car sitting there gathering rust.

Are there any special tips you can offer to shift a car, other than dropping the price to zero? ;)

Edit; I also haven't had my logbook stamped but I do have the garage receipts of work done. Is this going to deter buyers?

3)if priced right you have 5 weeks to sell,so wouldnt worry too much about the tax at the mo

special tips) ensure the car is clean and tidy and no junk in it,give a good honest description of it in the advert and include pics wherever poss

Logbook) I take it you mean the service history booklet?

I'd suggest giving it a good clean, take some decent photos (including any bad bits) and then putting it on ebay with an honest description including faults and put the reserve as what you have been offered in PX

I presume as its 11 years old and the PX value is minimal your not expecting a massive amount for it i'd say cash is best for payment.

so long as its got a decent length on the MOT tax isnt that important

Ebay is a good option as other have said put an honest descrition of it clean it and put up some good photos

also when it does sell do a disclaimer type thing to say when the buyer took the car get him/her to sign and date/time it that way any tickets etc are their problem

If you do sell on Ebay, how does the buyer test it before they bid/win the auction?

Forget about eBay, it's a nightmare, rubbish option.
People just want a bargain on eBay, so cars go for cheap, few people bid high, and when a bidder does win it (without inspecting it first) they can turn up and try to haggle or back out of the deal, it's a pain.

Stick it on Autotrader, I've sold 4 cars over the last couple years and I sold every car within 2 days when I put it on Autotrader, it gets people ringing about it straight away, they come to have a look and if they like it you can sell them it, if not then they just leave and then soon the next person will come. Easy. Take cash only for an old relatively inexpensive car.

    Thanks Pendulum,

Yeh I have, myself, though that about Ebay. Nothing wrong with a 'bargain' but I'd prefer to use the term 'give it away'. I think some Ebayers fondly imaging you actually will sell them the car for £100, when it's market value is nearer to £800

Having sold a fair amount of stuff over the years I've recognised that a moderate starting price, reserve or BIN generates NO interest, so you stick it on at 99p startiing bid and spend the next 7 days sweating in case you end up giving it away.

    .

Rubbish, eBay have a " Classified " method of selling cars at a fixed price, which is in effect, no different to using AutoTrader.

The listing cost is also very reasonable, many dealers use this option.
