Driving test routes
I am looking ahead about the driving test routes. I've found a website about it on here: http://www.dsa.gov.uk/AtoZservices_Bannered.asp?Cat=-1&TestType=car&TypeID=17 (click on a place, and they will tell you the exact routes).
They have lots of routes. Does that mean I get to choose one, or the driving examiner chooses it?

The examiner chooses it.
There's more to driving than simply learning a test route. That is why you will have no say in where you go. To earn a licence, you will have to prove to the examiner that you can cope with any and all road and traffic conditions, even in places you've never been before in your life.
You won't be able to learn all the routes anyway; there are too many. Not only that, but they change all the time and those on the web are generally out of date. Just drive how you've been taught by your instructor, learn to "read the road" and you'll be fine.0 -
The examiner will chose and he/she won't give you any indication of which route you're going to be taking beforehand, just directions as you go along.0

I saw some 'extended' test routes. What does this mean?0

When I took my test they only had 4 routes at that centre!
Anyway you don't get to choose which one you go on - your examiner should take you around some of the more popular ones. Also if they are running late they will take you on a shorter one.
If your driving test area is close to you - try and go their as much as possible0 -

honestly
If you have a decent instructor he will have shown the routes and any potential pitfalls at some stage before the test!0 -
Talking about test routes reminds me about when i took my motorbike test when i was 16 (40yrs ago)
I think it's probably changed now but then the tester would say 'go around the block turning first left second left until i tell you to stop'
I went around the block near to the centre twice, i'd seen the man running from corner to corner to watch me turn. He pulled me over and told me i now needed to go first right second right.
I ended up going around the same block but in the opposite direction. But i couldn't see the tester, at first i thought he was hiding behind a car or something. After a while it seemed as if i'd gone around this block about 20 times, i decided he'd gone for his dinner, it was 12 o'clock, but i couldn't stop.
Eventually i saw him in the distance, by the time he reached me i'd been around the block twice more. He pulled me over and said 'where have you been, you're suppose to be up there'.
He set me off again and surprise surprise 15mins later he handed me a pink slip, i'd passed.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

If you have a " decent instructor " he/she will have taught you to drive properly in all available conditions, test routes can and do change, depending on local traffic conditions.0
