Legally, what am I entitled to?

  • When I used to work for DSG, the only refund method was the same as the payment method.
Fraudsters used to buy products with a (dodgy) card. Accept a refund in vouchers. Buy something else with the vouchers, get the change in new vouchers etc etc. This creates a massive chain of gift vouchers which the company finds difficult to keep track of and the bank claims the money back from the dodgy card. Ultimately the company loses out.

IMO the store is well within their rights to only refund by the original payment method.

glad you got it sorted out, I have been given monsoon vouchers for exchanges before so was going to suggest a different store! If you hadn't have had the receipt they also give you vouchers, but at a lower value if the item has recently gone on sale.

I love Monsoon clothes too, but there isn't always something I'd like there.

Just out of curiosity I would like to know what would happen if I bought something on my credit card and within a week or so I then cancelled that cc. (Yes, I am a cc tart and proud of it :p ) what would the shop do then? I no longer have the card that I made the purchase with.

I have often wondered about this when I have had to return faulty goods a few months or so after I had bought them.

    Any ideas ?

    Hi Purdy,

In my store you would not get a refund. This has happened a couple of times. Sometimes the card has been stolen & a replacement card issued with a different number - in this case we would ask the customer to obtain a letter from their bank explaining this. I've only had it happen a handful of times in 15 years in retail and the bank has issued the letter no probs.

If you had cancelled your card then you would only get offered gift vouchers.

To the poster who suggested handing over a different card - you wouldn't get away with that in my shop! We are all too vigilant and make sure we check the card details match before it goes into the chip and pin machine.

We get a lot of hassle sometimes when the purchase was made by the husband, for example, and the wife returns the item and expects a refund on her card because its a joint account. Unfortunately, almost always the card number is different - the customer usually gets really irate at this. How are we supposed to know if its a joint account or not!

I'm glad you got your vouchers second time round bylromarha - its the most sensible option and is what most retailers should/would do - you must have caught the first manager on an off day! No excuse - but possible!
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
