You see plenty people in the winter seasons driving in the dark and it hasn't twigged for them to stick their lights on yet. Presume their clock/watch overrules the street lights and the obvious fact the sun has gone :) I had some lessons December sort of time at about 4pm and it got darkish then.

My husband is guilty of this, it drives me nuts. I'm constantly snapping at him to put his lights on.

I'm sure your instructor would be happy to give you a lesson in the evening after work (if you have a job).

It also might be a good idea to look at the weather forecast on BBC or wherever and try and book a lesson for when it's predicted to be very rainy and horrible. Driving in heavy rain is really quite different to driving on a sunny day.

If you have your lessons late afternoon, you'll be driving in the dark soon enough; the clocks go back this Sunday.

Although you won't do your driving test in the dark, you can ask for a lesson any time you like, day or night providing your instructor agrees. If you don't ask, you'll never know.

As previous posters have said, Pass Plus does include a night driving module, but why wait? It's good experience to learn all conditions before taking your test.

Indeed, as well as the fact that at this time of year, it can turn dark very quickly, so whilst your test will not start in the dark, it could well turn dark during the test.

My lessons are usually from 2-3 in the afternoon. When I feel comfortable driving, I will ask my driving instructor to book me in for a lesson from 3-4 or 4-5 in the afternoon. I will do this in December time, since it's a good time to do this. I'm still learning the 'basics' at the moment by the way, so don't want to learn in the dark just yet.

I will do just that when I have a job (soon). Hopefully a time like 5-6 or 6-7, depending on my instructor's and my tea time.

Back in the 80's my instuctor took me out in all weather conditions - light snow, frost, rain, sunshine, fog etc and in both daylight and night time.

Passed first time and i'm a pretty decent driver because of it, even if i say so myself.

Guess it depends on whether you have a good instructor.

Just wear a couple of pairs of sunglasses.
  • As I learned in the winter my lessons were often in the dark, my instructor actually said he preferred to start his students off in the dark as it stopped them looking at the gear stick when changing gear, as they couldn't see it!!
